My cat has an "accident" on my back up pc, The motherboard (M3A78-EM) got nailed through the IO slot, I cleaned it up but there is a short, it only stay on for an hour before black screen, everything besides the Mobo is fine.

1)Will an AM3+ mobo be reverse compatible with my AM2+ cpu?
2)I'm looking at an M5A78L-M.Will I get a similar OC with the new mobo? (on paper the boards are similar).
3)Are there any mobo still sold around $50 that can use my DDR2 ram (that would be ideal)

Thanks!

Solution
The 940 must run on a DDR2 board so no AM3+ or even AM3 (unless it is a rare one that runs ddr2). As far as boards go you are probably going to have to find a used one on ebay or something like that.

Thats all I would need? AM2+ or higher as long as it runs DDR2?

Only found this so far
GA-MA785GM-US2H Rev: 3.3 Socket AM2/AM2+/AM3

I get to figure out if this thing has the TDP get me near a 1 ghz OC, its not worth sinking more than $60 on this machine.

Thanks for the quick reply but the 940 has a TDP of 125watt w/o an overclock, I think replacing the damaged board will be tough, probably not worth the effort.

The 920 and 940 were AM2+ because the AM3 platform was not out yet so the DDR3 controller is disabled on them making it so you can only use boards with DDR2 support. Also if you can get a board for cheap then I would replace the board as a 940 is plenty fast for just normal desktop use. If you rather get a new system keep in mind that you will need a cpu, ram, and board at the least.

Maybe a have a rare chip but, 940 is running has been running at 3.838 ghz with a Hyper 212 and a +0.05 volt, peak temp 45C increase on this cheap micro atx board (can't even type the voltage, just a drop down with +0.00, +0.05, +0.10, +0.15).

The chips temps are great, adding more voltage does nothing to increase the OC, but at 3.8GHZ its just enough for my wife to play her F2P games smoothly, at stock speed it's not. She's due for an upgrade so if I dont fined a replacement mobo, no biggie (she can use my PC til the Zen get released)
