Can't Find Driver

Hello,

I'm on my step-dad's Sony Vaio laptop. Last time I used it was around 2012. Between then and now he has sent it off to best buy and other computer repair places. Today, I got on it and instantly noticed that the resolution was low so I went to go change it. This is where the problem begins. The maximum resolution I can set it to 1280x1024. I thought, maybe I should just go update the drivers which should've already been up to date. I went on the Nvidia website to detect the card and the driver it needed but it kept saying I needed Java which I installed 4 separate times through the link it provided as well as through the website "Ninite" and the actual Java website. My next move was to go into Device Manager and do it from there. When I looked it said the name of the card was "Microsoft Basic Display Adapter". I got scared for a second, I thought maybe my step dad took it to some sketchy repairman who then proceed to swap out the cards since he probably knew that my step dad knows nothing about computers(still haven't ruled that option out). I then pulled up DxDiag to look at the display page on there but it says the Chip and DAC type are both by NVIDIA. I'm not sure what to do anymore. I really just wanted to update the drivers to have the resolution set to 1920x1080p and play League of Legends in class!

All help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

Jeremy Perez

I ran CPU-Z but I couldn't find the model name/number. On the Laptop it says Sony Vaio AW Series Notebook VGN-AW120J. CPU-Z says the same thing as DxDiag (Microsoft Basic Display Adapter) however it displays the Nvidia logo.

UPDATE:

I found out the original specs. It was a Geforce GTX 9600M GT. So I looked up the driver. There was a windows 10 pack that listed this GPU as one that was supported however, upon trying to install this the paused and said that no supported gpu could be found. I also tried just the individual 9M series they had as well as multiple updates, none worked.

Let me also add that when I turn on the laptop the VAIO and Windows logo are all looking crisp and nice but as soon as I get onto the desktop it looks awful.

Under additional information in Nvidia Website

2. The following Sony VAIO notebooks are included in the Verde notebook program: Sony VAIO F Series with NVIDIA GeForce 310M, GeForce GT 330M, GeForce GT 425M, GeForce GT 520M or GeForce GT 540M. Other Sony VAIO notebooks are not included (please contact Sony for driver support).

The driver provided by Nvidia may not work for your laptop since the OEM made custom driver for your laptop.

You can use the video driver made by Sony.
It is meant for Windows 7 but I think it should work under Windows 10.
If it doesn't work you can navigate to device manager and locate the driver manually from the driver folder.

Unfortunately this didn't solve the issue. I'm thinking maybe installing a version of Windows 7 on here and hope that works. I have a few spare slim hard drives so I'll try it on one of those.

UPDATE:

No luck. I seem to be stuck again.
