Hi all
I currently have an r9 280x and looking to upgrade, now would I see much of an improvement if I went and bought an rx480? Or would it serve me better to go higher?
Rest of my rig is
Amd fx 6300
8gb 1333mhz
asus m5a78l-m
500w 80 plus bronze

Thanks

Metro does run a little smoother with nVidia, but your specs should still be sufficient to run at High @ 1080p.

How do your temps look? (CPU & GPU - are you monitoring? If not, use something like HWMonitor and ensure they're in 'safe' rage).

As for Doom, your CPU is definitely holding you back. Minimum spec (from an AMD standpoint) is an FX-8320 or 8350.

Your GPU is still totally capable for what you want to do (at 1080p).

Ensure you have the latest drivers installed, including uninstalling old versions (you can use a program like DDU to do this).

Moving to 1440p, assuming playing the same games, you'll need to better your CPU - An i5-6500 is a great choice.

The 280X has some limitations at 1440p - you won't be maxing out...

It depends what you're playing & which resolution as to how much of an improvement it'll be.

The 280X is still a totally viable card today - where are you seeing issues that make you think you need to upgrade your GPU?

If anything, I'd say a 280X is held back by the FX-6300 some.

Im currently playing at 1080p, however I may have a play on 1440p if i connect to my 4k tv, issues ive seen is that it struggled to run metro last light even on medium settings, although I do understand that metro runs better with nvidia, doom 2016 seemed to run alot better on my xbox one than it does on my 280x, would I see an upgrade if I bought and i5 6500 and run that with my 280x?

The 280X has some limitations at 1440p - you won't be maxing out new titles & achieving 60FPS, for example.
Should be more than a playable experience all-round.

I'd look to replace the CPU before the GPU.

As an FYI, as much as I hate to say it, an upgrade within the FX line - would likely be more 'budget friendly' - although not a very good 'bang for buck' all things considered.

An i5-6500, new motherboard, DDR4 RAM and likely a new copy of Windows will set you back between $350-$400.

While that would be my recommendation for you, if the budget is tight, you'd see improvements by upgrading your CPU to something like an FX-8350 for ~$200.

While I hate recommending AMD as there's nothing worth investing in (at the moment, new Zen releases should give some decent alternatives to Intel) - for the 'budget' option, as you already have the mobo/RAM etc, it might just make sense.

Thanks for the input :), So you think my best option is to buy an I5 6500 with some ddr4 and keep with my 280x for now, may save up and buy a 1070 then instead of a 480.

Yeah, while the 480 is a good improvement over the 280X, I don't feel it's THAT good an improvement. The 280X is still viable and should see you through a while yet. Save your cash for a better card (and prices will come down a little by then too likely).

Cheers, thanks for all your help, think that is the route im going to take, I5 6500 with some ddr4 and stick with my 280x for the time being, then upgrade to 1070 later :).

Again thanks for your help.

I have that gpu and Doom 2016 run very smooth all the time.

In fact I'd say it's the game I can run better. Quite everything maxed out except for one option that I can't remember right now, which slow it waaay down...
