So yeah, I haven't got a copy of Windows 7 to repair from yet...in the process.

In the meantime. can I do anything?

Here's the story. Computer crashed, now getting the typical HAL.dll missing error. Using HIREN'S boot CD, I was able to boot into the Hiren's mini XP, and I can see the root windows drive is there, and appears like all the files are intact (obviously something in windows or the bootsector isn't, but generally everything is there). I also have a non-bootable copy of Windows 7. Is there any specific file I can replace or something I can do to repair the boot loader? Obviously I cant run BOOTMGR or sfc /scannow on the bad drive, those won't run within the miniXP. I can't seem to boot into repair mode on the non-bootable DVD obviously. Is there any manual workaround to rebuild the booting instructions? I'm an old XP guy, not familiar with the booting on 7, I know that it doesn't use boot.ini nor any of those files anymore, but beyond that I'm lost in this environment..
I ran chkdsk, and it found some errors, though I am hesitant to blindly just fix those and then gosh knows what that will do to the drive.

Any help would be appreciated! thanks.

First backup your files if you have not done so. The errors about missing files are often caused by a failing hard drive, but it could be just a file system issue though from the crash and improper shut down.

If you have the system booted to a disk and can see the files on the disk, first backup up your files if you don't already have a backup, then fix the errors with chkdsk, see if that helps things. If not, you can just do a clean setup of Windows or a Repair setup and see if that works OK. I suggest getting a new hard drive and installing Windows clean on that.
