SSD no longer detected in both BIOS and Windows 10

Today was my day off, so I figured I should play some Deus Ex: Mankind Divided. After about 3 hours of playtime, I decided to take a break. I quit the game, and when the screen went to the desktop, my mouse couldn't click: I could move the cursor, but I couldn't click on anything. My keyboard was also unresponsive as well. I then decided to hit the power button to shut it down. Once the computer booted back up, I saw a notification that says, "Overclocked failed," which made no sense because I never overclock my GPU or CPU. So I restarted the PC one more time to get into BIOS. MY SSD drive, which was where I installed my OS, was no longer present.

Baffled, I took apart my PC to see if the SATA cable was pinched or disconnected. Everything was in order, but the problem still persists. After about two hours of surfing through google on my phone for a viable solution, I gave up and decided to reformat my PC; this time I installed Windows 10 on my HDD instead because the SSD was not there. Startup now takes a whopping 3 minutes and 30 seconds to complete, whereas before it only took 20-30 seconds.

Do I need to buy a new SATA cable AND a new SSD?

Here are my specs:

i7 5820k
16GB RAM
Asus X-99 Motherboard
Asus ROG STRIX GTX 1080
Toshiba 120 GB SSD
1TB HDD (forgot brand name)

P.S.: I'm not a PC wizard. This is actually my first rig. My buddy, who helped me put this PC together, doesn't know what caused the problem.

Please help me if you can :(

Hi MisterNguyen

I have an ASUS x99 and a samsung SSD for OS also.

Since the first day, my new PC (6 months now) started booting to BIOS once every 10 times. It got fixed by unplugging and plugging back the SSD HD (LOL)... Today It kept booting to BIOS and SSD didn''t show up in the boot order options.

After googleing around, I have found in this very forum what I suspect is the root cause: Asus x99 doesn't support SATA devices, but PCIe ones:

In the BIOS, go to BOOT->BOOT OVERRIDE and choose your SSD HD device (In my case it shows up) and voila, I can boot my W7

I'm not sure if this is "good practice" but t works for now... Hope this helps.

Regards.

It's not detected in the BIOS either? Hmmm...

Have you loaded 'optimized defaults' in the BIOS? Disable any XMP profile too (for the time being)

How about changing data (or sata) cables, or attaching to another SATA header on the motherboard?

Hi Barty,

Thank you for your response. After reading your post, I went into BIOS but failed to locate the "optimized defaults" setting. The XMP, however, was already disabled. Changing the cables also didn't help. :(

I loaded the default settings like you said, but still nothing. :(

A few moments ago, the SSD was detected in Windows as "unknown," but now it's gone. D:
