I'm looking at making my first gaming PC, and I'm a bit lost.. i'm trying to keep costs low.

I've a few options.

Core 2 Quad processor with GTX 750ti on a LGA775 4 slot DDR2 RAM motherboard

or a

Cheap i3 processor with GTX 750ti on a LGA1155 2 or 4 slot DDR3 RAM motherboard

If I'm right the C2Q would be £15 CPU + £65 GPU + £30 mobo (£110) and i3 would be £30 CPU + £65 GPU + £40 mobo (£135).......... obviously that's not including PSU, HD, etc.

at the moment I've got 4 x 2 GB DDR2 RAM, a Core 2 Quad Q8200 2.33GHz, old PC tower case, and a HD.

What's a good ATX or micro-ATX motherboard for either of my setups? and is the GPU a good choice for either?

you want to buy the newest cpu you can for the money and then when you have the funds buy the gpu. try selling parts you can use from your old build to help. look at the newer i3 or g4400 and h110 mb. if there in your price range if not look at the older cpu and h mb. on gpu see if the newer 470 is in your price range. or the 950/960. or look for older higher end gpu. you want to buy a gpu that faster hen the 750ti, it a weak entry level gaming card.

I can't really afford the more expensive i3 or gpu's just now. I've got a PS4 and I'm not trying to make a gaming PC better than it. I've not had a Windows computer before (unless you count Win 95) as I use Macs so just having Windows 10 would be good.

Gaming wise, I do want something that can play modern games in 1080p ideally, at 30+fps, but I don't expect it to play all new games on 1080p max settings 60 fps. The first game I'm planning on is Quake 1 and also Rollercoaster Tycoon 2 and then some more modern ones. Planet Coaster maybe.

I'm thinking a better i3, gpu and modern motherboard would be £200+ so looking at twice the price which I can't really do.

I've seen on YouTube both low end i3s and high end core 2 quads with good gpus running modern games well.

I think in the future if I liked my gaming PC i could save up for one much better than my PS4 and sell the one I'm making now. But that'd probably be in a few years.
