So i have a Z170-A motherboard, a hyper 212x, i7 6700K, a R9 295x2 and cooler master G750m power supply, i'm just wondering if i could run a second power supply off of my motherboard because i have a spare 450W power supply lying around from my old pc, what i want to do is run all of my pc with the 450W psu accept the gpu, and run the gpu off of the 750W PSU so it has enough power. i can't afford a 1200W or a 1000W PSu that's why i wanna do this. on a thread that i posted about me not getting the best performance out of my gpu someone said that i might be power throttling. my gpu runs around 40 degrees Celsius when idle and 75 degrees Celsius under load. the thing is my card is supposed perform much better. so if my card is power throttling just wondering if could make this go away by adding another power supply

BTW i tried to adjust the fan speeds but i can't it's locked in afterburner i tried going into settings and changing settings but didn't work. i want to give the gpu more power but not sure if my PSU would be able to handle it or not.

Cheers!!!

There is NO solution other than a custom water cooling kit, at which point it'll just be cheaper to get a GTX1070 and enjoy better performance in pretty much all games!

The power supply is NOT the issue, the issue is HEAT, which is intrinsic to your current GPU's design.

Dual PSU's never represent a good setup in terms of stability. A good 750W PSU (real power) would be able to run your system fine as it would consume around 650W in full load (not overclocked). Yours has a 12V rail supporting up to 62A which translates to 744W so it should be inside the specs. There is no "power throttling" the system will simply BSOD or restart by itself during intensive gaming if the power is not adequate.

1) Your CPU+GPU+ everything else only take up ~500W (of which 400W is your GPU), you can safely run it off a decent 750W PSU (yours isn't, but that's another issue)

2) The power throttling is normal, and has nothing to do with the PSU. The GPU is pretty much a ridiculously horrible device that is power constrained on any system, and would overheat without water cooling.

3) You CANNOT plug in two random consumer power supplies and hope it all works. There will be major issues due to differences in voltages (most taken care of by the VRM, but at additional strain) and you could even experience a catastrophic failure if one PSU shuts down while the other is running

4) That 450W PSU is probably not haswell approved and will likely shut down at idle/sleep (see above)

There certainly are dual-psu (and more) systems in the commercial world, especially in high end servers, however those power supplies are not standard ATX models and are designed for tandem/failover operation.

the gpu doesn't suck it just runs a bit hotter than others.

that's why i was looking for a solution the card is still good in 2016
