My computer died, and I'd like to understand how

Basically, my computer won't stay shut down, but it also won't display and video. I'm not sure if it's actually booting or not. Of I press the power button, nothing happens, and if I hold it, it shuts down then immediately powers back up. Just before this problem started, my speakers output some buzz/crackling as if the connection was faulty, and then my computer shut down, immediately turning back on with nothing but the "no input"prompt on my monitor.

I run(ran) windows 7 32bit, 3gb ram, Intel core 2 duo, and I can't recall my video card but it was an AMD e5500 series I think.

Check and see if you can access the bios. Also take out the hard drive and RAM after and see if anything different happend. But my gut tells me your motherboard just died.

Update: it just booted up with no difficulties despite me doing nothing differently. Even if it functions fine though(for a while at least) I'm still curious what could cause something like this.

I'll check if all the fans are working, but I don't think it's overheating. It doesn't bluesreen, but beyond that, it wouldn't explain why it turns itself back on repeatedly afterward.

UPDATE 2: it happened again, and although I'm not particularly proud of it, I smacked the computer around a bit with it unplugged after several attempts to allow the static to clear and try again. oddly enough it crashed twice, and hitting it seemed to help it boot both times, which leads me to believe it could be a faulty connection somewhere.
