I have 300 dollars to spend I have a gtx 970 and i5 4590 and 16 gb ram a good motherboard for overclocking I was wondering what part should I upgrade the cpu to i7 4790k which I am getting in 270 dollars or gpu to gtx 980ti MSI 6g golden edition which I am getting in 300 dollars which will be more future proof and will give me more performance

Solution
The 980ti will give you much more performance gain (with almost double the RAM) and hence will be much more future-proof. The i5 is still a decent CPU with only about 10% slower performance in single core than that i7. The 980ti is much better choice in my opinion. The CPU upgrade will give you marginal improvement. Consider also getting a 144hz monitor, because the 980ti will push many frames and the extra Hz really do make a huge difference in smoothness.

the bigger fps gain for you would be a new gpu

4590 is still very powerful. 16GB RAM is already enough.
Going for 4790k will not bring as much as a better GPU for gaming.
Going for stronger GPU than GTX970 is better option.
From GTX970, only GTX980Ti and GTX 1070 are the minimum choices at the moment.
If you can, go for GTX1070 but if you can get GTX980Ti for cheap, go for it.
