So my friend and I are having a debate, is it worth spending an extra $50 AUD on a i3 6100 for an as cheap as possible console killer build. He says that games like GTA V uses more than two cores and a G3258 would perform poorly. So is a i3 6100 worth spending an extra $50 on?

Solution

Pick which one you want to achieve. Perhaps 12 months ago the pentium was OK, it could be massively OC'd which helped. Now, I think that cores are more important and this will continue to become more important. So the i3.

Games like GTA V perform poorly because they are ported poorly...
They have messed up thread priorities and perform badly even on the i3 or i5,on a dual it's just more intense.
There is an easy fix.

For it to be worth to go to the i3 you will also have to be able to get a GPU that will not restrict the i3 and or play games that greatly benefit from the extra cores,if you play simulations/MMOs and the likes an overclocked g3258 will still be better.
The i3-6100 is on a never platform though and gets the benefits of DDR4 mem so there is a lot of things to consider.
