Which to buy: GTX 1070 or 1080?

Which should I buy in terms of not having to change components very often?

I currently have the gtx 1060 and I don't plan on running 4k reso; probably 1440p. But I'm currently running 1080p and planning on getting a total of 3 monitors but will only be gaming on 1 monitor, 2 monitors for other stuff such as on the left will be web browsing and the right monitor will be movies/streaming.

I plan on giving this as a gift to my nephew and have decided to get at least a 1070. But I'm kind of torn between a 1070 or 1080, but I don't know if it's a good idea to shell out more for a 1080.

I plan on keeping whatever my final build will be for about 6-10 years.

Can someone give me any advice on what to buy? I'm just trying not to spend too much but I'm open on spending a bit more if the build will last me 6-10 years.

is it alright assume that the gtx 1080 will be able to handle games in the next 6-10 years at 1080p max settings in at least 60fps?

I would only buy a 1080 if you plan on 4K Gaming, otherwise it would be a complete waste with a 1080 if you use 1440p or 1080p, so I would definitely go for the 1070.

The 1070 will definitely handle 1440p with no issues, and no doubt 3x1440p.

This card will most likely handle most games at 1440p and near, if not maximum settings, as the 970 can handle basically most games at max settings at 1080p.

I wouldn't give GTX 1080 many chances for 1080p@60 for that long... I think 5yrs is about what could be reasonably expected, but my crystal ball is just as worth as anybody else's ;-)

no build that can be purchased today will be able to run games for 6 years on high settings at 1440p.
it is possible only with less demanding/casual games.
Get the whatever you can comfortably afford today and that can run your games. Sounds like 1070 is good idea for few years on 1440p

Thanks for all your insights guys. Really appreciate it.

Do you guys think I'm saving money by buying a gtx 1080 and let it last for 5 years? Or not?

Or is it a lot cheaper to buy 1070 and upgrade after 2 years vs buying a gtx 1080 making last for 5 years? Vice Versa

Tends to work out much cheaper to just upgrade and sell your old card every couple of years or so when a good new mid-high end card gets released. Doesnt take long for the mid range card to match the performance of the high end, every couple generations (I went from a 780 to a 1060 and it was a significant increase in performance).

I upgrade my GPU when the old one can not deliver.
it was a once a year, than once in 2 years, and last one pulled 6 years.
on 1080p and 1440p 1070 will hold for 3-4 years easily unless there is some drastic change in technology.
There is no saving in buying 1080 - it's a high end card and comes at considerably higher cost.
Much wiser to get the xx70 and upgrade it every couple of years while selling the old one.

Well, my GTX 580 (oced EVGA hydro version) endured for 5years, but I am more than happy for 1440p@30FPS... Above that I can't tell the difference at all. First thing that broke it's neck was Witcher 3 (I didn't try it right away, given it usual grace period for patching up bugs), then Black Desert Online where both run in pretty much slideshow mode (and I am too picky to give up gfx quality on a big screen). So my investment paid off. I wouldn't be so sure this longetivity is repeatable though. And if so, it would be more likely with new architecture (Vega) rather than resfresh (Pascal). Given technological progress and your aim not to change screen in near future it's very likely better to go for 1070 and see how long it keeps up. But 6-10 yrs with 1080p@60 .. don't think SLIed Pascal Titan X can handle that. It would be like wanting to play games released these days on GeForce 7800 GTX (note, it's 7800, not 780).

I'm just worried that if ever I get the 1080 it will easily be replaced by a next gen GPU by 50-70% in 2 years. That's the only thing that's holding me back in getting a 1080. if that were the case then the 1070 will most likely be the best option. I wish computer parts would hold its novelty for a very long time such as more than 5 years. But then I guess that's the reality when it comes to electronics, they're not like Watches et al(eg. rolex, etc) which holds their value forever. :(

Yeah I don't plan on getting a 4k soon unless there's a card that can run 4k @ max settings on 144hz 100+ FPS with at least 1 monitor.

you can upgrade a mid range card (like 1060 or 480 this gen) every other year and spend less money than going high end every 4-5 years. And after that 1st upgrade your mid gen will be = or greater than your old high end card.

just get the GTX1070, it will last at least 3 years on 1440p, after that it will still have a decent resell value, specially for those who stayed at 1080p. you can sell it and get the XX70 of that generation. I just got one after having a GTX660, it was actually still quite capable but I wanted to move to 1440p (which i even did with the 660 and ran Overwatch 120FPS/medium settings/1440p.

I plan on keeping my GTX1060 for now and let it wear out and wait for a 1080 TI. Maybe if I decide to get 1440p I'll get a much better GPU and the monitor at the same time. I'll just give my i5 6500 and my current case since it doesn't do well on cable management. LOL! Maybe I'll wait for a TI versions.
TI versions seems to be in par with the next gen GPU, such as 980TI vs 1070 seems to be almost in the same performance level.

I guess the one lacking in my system would be the CPU. I guess I'll change it to i7 6700k and add in a liquid cooling system. :D
