RX480 4GB - value winner
RX480 8GB - potential for DX12 and async compute improvements with new game titles
GTX 1060 3GB - Slightly slower then the 6GB, but a little cheaper. A good compromise for a 1080p system.
GTX 1060 6GB - Fast performance now for DX11 titles, and good performance for upcoming DX12 titles

Nvidia cards are a little more energy efficient then their AMD counterparts, but not really enough to matter.

presently, i use the GTX 970.
a lot of people are saying that upgrading from 970 to gtx 1060 will not make any significant difference in games.
& i should instead buy the gtx 1070.
what do u say about that ?

Sort of agree. A 1060 is roughly as fast as a GTX980. A GTX970 is literally 13/16 of a GTX980. So you would be looking at something like a 20% increase. Pascal overclocks fairly well though, so you could push that a little.

But a 1070 is quite a bit faster and you will see a noticeable improvement. Though they are a little overpriced at the moment.

1060:
More power efficient
Faster in almost all DX11 titles

RX480
Faster in Vulkan
Cheaper (usually)

Both have similar performance in DX12 so far.

If you're gaming at 1080p you probably don't need to upgrade the 970 unless the 3.5 VRAM isn't enough. You'd definitely notice improvement in the 1060. The VRAM bottleneck would be gone, faster clock speeds, better card. If you don't want to drop $400+, the 6GB 1060 would make the most sense as an upgrade. The 1070 would be pretty greedy for 1080p, but it's a great card and would definitely max out every title. Actually GTA V might still laugh at you. But there won't be much of a visible downgrade going from 1070 to 1060, so I'd recommend the 1060 if you don't wanna blow an extra $150+. But if you aren't experiencing issues with the 3.5GB VRAM, then the upgrade to the 1060 isn't even that much of an improvement.
