How different is the performance, FPS wise? I've dont some research and realised its about a 20% different on most games, is that worth a 40euro upgrade?

as said it really depends on your setup, the displays and resolutions you're playing
the 1060 performs at the level of a 980 so if the 970 is not at least 100quid cheaper it's a no brainer to go for the 1060
the reference card has like 10-15fps on a factory oc'd MSI 970 @1080p
especially dx12 support is much better with the 1060
