My friend owns a gtx 660ti for a while and noticed the tems sky rocketed to 98 degrees during gaming section and calles me over and try to solve it. i finded out that one of the fan stop spinning after a secound after boot up. even though the temperature is under control after cleaning the heatsink and replacing the thermal paste, which is 78 under 5 mins of unigine valley loop.
Is this good enough or will the missing fan cause any trouble like vrm heating up?

Solution
so the second fan not spinning at all? have you tried forcing the fan speed using third party tool such as MSI AB? what exact model did your friend have?

yes the second fan is not spinning after boot, but it spin for a sec after boot thats all.
i used msi af, while the fan control works, only the first fan is spinning.
i just wanted to know will missing one fan harmful to the vrm or other component if the core temp is under control?

probably something wrong with the fan controller or the fan simply dead. because on of the feature of twin frozr was to operate only on one fan. though i don't really remember if that is exclusive to twin frozr v only or not. anyway as you said the gpu temp probably not much of a concerned. but other stuff like VRM and such can end up being overheated because insufficient cooling. RMA no longer possible?

i have seen some twin frozr ii or iii fan on ebay are those possible to swap to?

i'm not even sure if they are really compatible. worse they screw hole might not aligned with your friend 660ti PCB. so he have no intention to replace his gpu soon? maybe you guys can go DIY route. that's what i do with my 660. one of the fan die so i have to remove the fan permanently. then strap 80cm fan at it's place. not the best solution but good enough with my 660.
