WD 1TB caviar black.
Had a PC failing to boot - removal of the HDD has cured that - the drive will not come up on a PC, and drags the PC down.
It was tried on a Mac and it would be seen OK, and would scan, but at end of the scan no files found.

Are there any free data recovery programs that will at least allow this to be brought up and then attempts for recovery .... or do I just have to accept the data loss.

I have a back up, ... but around 3 weeks out of date.

It will depend on how bad the file structure of the WD drive is Sargan.

If the drive is old, and has a hard life, lots of use reading and writing files on a daily basis.
Then it likely the drive, or disk platter of the drive used to store data on is suffering from hard errors.

Basically it`s the point where most of the parts if the disk platter used to store data no longer have enough of a magnetic field to be able to retain the data written to it or when trying to read data from it.

Especially if the area of the drive where the file allocation table is held that keeps a record of all the files stored on the hard drive and there locations that are mapped for reading and writing to by the drive heads.

Once that happens if you scan a drive and you know there is, or used to be data on it but it reports as finding no files at all.

You pretty much just have to throw the drive in the bin Saragan.
Any data on the drive is likely too well corrupted to read, even if you try recovery software with the WD black drive you have.

You can always give it a try but it will take a very long time to recover any data from the drive possibly a good 17 to 20 hours if your unlucky, and not much of the data may be recovered for the time spent running the recovery software.

The drive is not that old (still under warranty) and has relatively little use.
There were no pre warnings of errors or alarms.

You mention trying something that can take 17 to 20 Hrs - what program are you referring to .... time is not the issue, I can just let it run.

If the drive is new Sargan.

Then I suggest you try and replace the Sata data cable used from the motherboard Sata ports to the WD Caviar drive.
As it could be as simple as a bad Sata cable.

If I had known the drive was new from your first post asking for help.
I would of suggested you replace the sata cable first of all.

So try that first Sargan, as it could fix all of the problems you say you are having with the new drive.
