System won't boot until I crash boot up

Hello,

I have an X99-Deluxe/3.1. My second ASUS X99 motherboard. The original one would fail to boot 1 in 10 times, and a simple reboot would fix it. That had a I7-5930K in it.

Since then the system has had a Z170-Extreme 7+ because I had cooling problems with the old board. But since the I7-6900K prices have started dropping I upgrade to the new Broadwell-E CPU.

This motherboard is worse than my previous ASUS X99-Deluxe. And getting a response from ASUS Technical support is like trying to get Google to stop collecting personal information - It's almost impossible.

So - The system will not boot, at any speed from stock 3.20ghz to 4.0 ghz, with memory at any frequency between 2133mhz stock and 3200mhz.. I am on the latest BIOS 3301, and I've re-flashed the system a couple of times, just in case BIOS got corrupted.

I've cleared CMOS many times, Moved my 950 Pro M.2 Drive from the vertical slot to the M.2 Hyper kit board. Tried it with no sata drives connected and moved my graphics card to a different slot.

There are two symptoms; (1). It stops on the post screen/logo screen and doesn't detect the mouse or keyboard. (2). It stops on the "Starting Windows" screen. Sometimes it will detect the mouse and keyboard, some times it will not.

All keyboards here are Logitech G105 and the mIce are Razer Taipan's. Tried those peripherals from other computers but symptoms are the same.

There are no error codes on the debug LED when the system hangs.

Also, there is a 20 second delay when I turn power on. The fans spin up to full speed, then once they slow down the system then beeps (one short normal beep), and that is when it hangs.

I suspect the board is not "faulty" per-se, but given I've had the same sorts of issues with both X99 offerings from ASUS I wonder if it might be a design issue?

EDIT: I've also reinstalled the chipset, USB, LAN and Audio drivers.

Anyway, I don't what the cause is, but I'd appreciate any suggestions.

Thanks
Tanya

Lol. I can get it to boot, eventually. Takes up to 20 minutes of retrying. Sorry.... I didn't specify that in the OP <blush>

So, obviously, once the system is running I can install drivers and use the system normally.

I'm not happy with having to spend 20 minutes every morning trying to get the system running though

Eventually I got a response from ASUS. The motherboard has been returned for RMA.

The hardware config in my profile is up to date.

The final answer is that this is a known issue with ASUS X99 boards. I should have done more research before I bought it.

Sadly, ASUS are aware of the issue, and rather than fix the problem they just keep selling them. Some work some don't.

And given that the X99-Deluxe/3.1 is nothing more than a X99-Deluxe with a 2 port USB 3.1 adapter card added in the problem has been around for a very long time. I figured my first X99-Deluxe purchase in 2015 was just a dud (It was nowhere near as bad though).

They didn't even both to try and resolve the issue. They took the board back and immediately issued a full credit.

When I asked if they have any X99 motherboards that might work they simply ignored my questions.

I think it goes a little deeper than "inexperienced support staff".

With all due respect, a massive company like ASUS can't replace a suspected faulty motherboard with a new one because they have no spares?? I think not!

The didn't replace it because all of the boards have the same issues.

If you Google this issue you will find literally thousands of hits on Youtube and articles about the issues. The most discussed boards are the X99-Deluxe and the X99-A.

The difficulty is that one does not know what one does not know. I could have Googled "Known issues with ASUS X99-Deluxe" before buying it, but that may not have revealed the problems.

I can tell you I have spent significantly more time researching the replacement board than I did the X99-Deluxe. There is no other board like the X99-Deluxe. The closest I can find is the Gigabyte X99-Phoenix SLI. That comes in short by 6 rear USB 3.0/2.0 ports and 1 fan header, with a BIOS that is not as comprehensive, but should get the job done.

Anyway, I think we can call this thread "solved", though the ASUS flaw remains outstanding and may never be resolved. A shame really. It was a nice board.
