What's a better deal!? 250 Dollar gtx 1060 or 160 dollar gtx 970

Ok so I am building my first pc currently. I have a Asus z170a mobo, i5 6600k, Samsung Evo 500gb, caviar blue 1 tb, phantom 410 nzxt case, and 8gb ddr4 ram, and a thermaltake tough power 1200w psu.

What is a better deal for a gpu?

I can get the MSI 6gb gtx 1060 for 250 brand new

Or

I can get EVGA 4gb gtx 970 for 160 used, but still have 600 days left on warranty.

What's the better option? Is the 1060 worth the extra 100 dollars?

1) The 1060 is basically a 980, so it's a reasonable amount faster
2) Warranty is non-transferable in most cases, so the 970 has zero warranty.

Given your build, the 1060 is probably the better bet even if it's a bit more expensive.

Just be ready to replace that PSU when it dies, I've never had a thermaltake PSU that lasted longer than two years...

I'd be tempted to go with the GTX 970, especially if you game at 1080p 60hz where the extra power of the GTX 1060 won't be relevant.

Yes, they do have guest RMA, but the conditions are pretty difficult to achieve. The limit is 3 years, but unless your serial number matches a new lot then most likely you'll have a bit less than a year, not 600 days! Without the original receipt it'll be difficult to tell how long your card will be in warranty. You also can't use advance RMA or the upgrade program, which is a great feature of evga cards!
