AMD Athlon II X4 640 or Phenom II X4 925?

Hey guys! What is better for gaming? By the way my mobo supports both. Don't care about the money for this two, from second hand it's just 10-15$ difference. Thanks. :)

Always go as high as a) your system can take, and b) your wallet can afford.

In your case, if they're available I'd go for the X4 960T or the X6 1055T. The 960T is faster per core, but the 1055T has more cores, so they trade spots in benchmarks (http://www.anandtech.com/bench/product/88?vs=147).

You may also want to consider OCing. There's a specific post about OC'ing the 1055T (http://www.overclock.net/t/1438816/looking-to-overclock-amd-phenom-ii-x6-1055t), which also has links to determine if your board is OK to OC with or not.

Nope, max support is phenom II cpus with max 95w.
Thanks anyway.

Like @naturesninja said, they're about in the same ballpark -- couldn't find an exact match, but http://www.anandtech.com/bench/product/122?vs=81 compares the Athlon II X4 935 vs. the Phenom II X4 920, & shows them pretty neck-and-neck -- & they're only separated by a tier on the CPU hierarchy (http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/cpu-hierarchy,4312.html). They're close, but I would go with the Phenom for the floating point & OC performance.

Exactly how much are they, though? Like he also said, they're not really great with more modern games -- we're already starting to see games that require FX chips as the minimum AMD CPU to play. What motherboard do you have, in case there's a better CPU it can handle?

EDIT: What's the motherboard model? If you are limited only to the 95W Phenom chips, what are the chips you can use? If possible, a 945 would be better (or the 95W model of the 955), or even better an X6 1065T (95W, hexa-core with same core frequency as the 925).

I know that I'm outdated, but I just got money for some new better cpu for my mobo, not to change whole rig, for now, they are from 35 to 45-50$. I got MSI K9N6PGM2-V2, max support: Phenom II X6 cpus > 1055T and below that one is 1045T and 1035T all have to be 95w
And there are phenom II x4 cpus that I'm thinking about > x925, x945(c2), x945(c3), x955, x960, 840T, 960T also 95w all of them.

If you can find a Phenom II X4 960 or 960T that would be the way to go, followed by a 955 or 945. They generally have better integer performance than most of the FX lineup. That mobo is am2/+, so I see you're options are fairly limited. Good luck to you.

Thanks for answering people! I bought phenom II x4 945 95w c3, and I can say that performance boost in games and windows is huge in compare to poor athlon 4400+. Thanks once again! :)
