The best route to upgrade your memory is to replace your 2x4gb dimms with 2x8gb.

The second best option is to buy the identical memory set and add it in your second 2 slots. This usually will work but there is a chance it will not as sometimes companies change memory suppliers or different batches of DRAM just don't play well with others.

The worst option is to add in a different brand. This very likely will have issues.

There is a possibility it won't work perfectly, yes. There's also a possibility that tomorrow a train will derail, crash into a truck, get launched into the sky, hit a plane, then that plane will fall down directly on me. The possibility exists, but I don't plan on staying home because of it.

That happened to my cousins friends brothers uncles former room mate.

In all seriousness the possibility of the ram not working right is quite a bit higher than that, but I agree 9 times out of 10 using the identical make and model set should work fine. Heck I am doing it right now in my gaming PC.
