Ethernet blocking wifi?

We upgraded to a brand new win 10 pc - it has an ethernet switch that talks to 4 networked printers and then we get internet access via a long range wifi (USB) receiver, logging into the home broadband. This worked fine on the old (win 7) PC but does not work at all on the new configuration. I'll try and be as accurate as i can with the troubleshooting we've done so far

Ethernet and wifi enabled - we can see the printers, but internet and connecting to house network - doesn't work. We can however connect to the router

if we disable ethernet - we can instantly surf and connect to other computers on the network. As soon as we enable ethernet, network traffic stops.

We have tried connecting to an alternative wifi (BT broadband) and the same happens.

When we use 4G as a hotspot - everything works fine.

As a caveat - if we go into a folder on another PC on the network, it seems to allow traffic if we enable the ethernet after "connecting" then it allows us to carry on. Same goes for different tabs on Edge - if we are already in say bbc, we can browse bbc pages, but if we go outside that bbc network, no connection

Have tried disabling firewall - no difference.

Can anyone help/shed any ideas as to what might be happening here? thanks!
