I plan to use one hard disk as the main backup (archive) for all my work. This hard disk wont move out of my room.I plan to buy another 1tb hard drive which i ll carry along for shoot. I d transfer data to my system from this working hard drive and also to the MAIN HARD DRIVE (ONE WHICH I AM PLANNING TO BUY).
Please suggest which external hard disk should i buy,
1) main drive for backup (archiving)
2) working drive to carry along.
I am an indie filmmaker.
Thanks in advance!!!

internal drives with an external case you buy and external storage drives are basically the same thing if you take them apart.

the only real difference are models which boast anti-vibration or anti-fall protection (bumpers, etc) but that is part of the case not so much the drive itself and models which are a NAS/RAID with more than one drive in them.

Ssddx.. thanks.. i read that hard drives meant for internal use, in a pc are comparitively more reliable than the ones used in portable drives available over the counter..
M confused about selecting the correct hard drive.. any suggestions are welcome...
Sorry for the wrong vote.. it was accidental.. i thought it was for something else..

i'll say it again.. if you open up those "external hard drives" there is an internal hard drive inside of them. basically like this or similar https://i.ytimg.com/vi/x-AMJqAQa08/maxresdefault.jpg

you can buy external cases for internal drives you pick or just buy them as is. the only difference other than special cases (dual drives/raid, special anti-shock protection) its basically the same thing.

drives i trust are western digitals caviar series, samsung spinpoints and seagate barracudas. there are many who say one fails over the other however honestly any of them are about the same (i've owned both caviars and barracudas).

as far as what i personally use for on-the go is external hard drive enclosures with internal drives. why? mostly because i have many such drives around already. depending on local prices one or the other may work for you.

if you want faster times, an ssd may be useful at the expense of more money paid for less space. samsung or intel is what i would suggest for the absolute best reliability but there are course alternatives if you arent too concerned

Thanks ssddx.. i am not looking at speed or a smaller size... my only priority is reliablity.. other factors arent important.. i cant afford to lose my data.. so should i go for a pre built hard drive ? If yes, Please suggest a model.. or should i build my own hard drive by buying an enclosure and a hard drive?
