I have Mint 17.3 Cinnamon 32bit Running on ASUS A7N8X-X mobo, AMD Athlon processor, 2 GB Crucial PC 3200 DDR 400 RAM. The machine has boot problems, even when booting to live disk. I get "recursive fault need to reboot" The RAM checks out after running Memtest+ 5.01. Is there a software that works w/Linux to determine if the CPU is defective? Could it be a chipset problem? Is there a test for chipsets?

Mint 17.3 Cinnamon runs quite well on that computer once I get it booted. It runs well after hitting the reset button several times.

That computer is two years older than Christ. It doesn't have SATA connectors.

OP, even if you are able to diagnose what the issue is... you probably won't be able to repair it yourself. And finding replacements that work with your rig will probably be very hard. I think it may be time to upgrade.

Plenty of parts available. I need it to run SCSI Scanner and old large format printer. I want to determine if it is the CPU. I don't think a CPU can be repaired, but it can be replaced. Don't want to buy one unless I know the CPU is causing the recursive fault. The Crucial RAM checks out OK. Could be the chipset causing the recursive fault. I can replace the mobo w/same but don't want to buy one unless I know the chipset is the problem.
