What would you experts recommend me to upgrade first? Monitor or GPU?

Good evening tom's hardware experts, I'm currently trying to make a tough decision on my own and I thought why not ask for help.

I can currently buy a new video card, the GTX 1070 OR a new monitor that has a nice resolution of 1440p / a ultra wide option from LG.

If I buy the new monitor I'll have to be stuck with an old GTX 970 for quite a while, let's say a few months, and if I buy the GTX 1070 I'll be stuck with the ancient monitor for a few months as well.

My current monitor is an AOC, of unknown model that supports the maximum of 1366x768 resolution, and yeah I know this thing is garbage but hey I've never had any problem with it and never cared about resolution that is until I went to my friends house and tasted for the first time the 1440p delicious pixels on screen, and now I'm crazy for it.

Gaming on a 1440p monitor is really fantastic and I really want it, but the main problem is that the GTX 970 wouldn't be able to handle the native resolution of 1440p. And the reason I want to upgrade to a GTX 1070 is that games will start to require more and more GPU power and I fear the 970 will get outdated soon. Money isn't a problem to buy any of the both options but I simply cannot buy both of them in one go as I have bills and stuff to pay.

For any of you concerned about my upgrade my computer is pretty decent, memory, CPU power and Power Supply are decent enough to handle a GTX 1070.
Any help and useful suggestions and infos would be very appreciated and I'll choose the solution for the best answer.

Thanks in advance.

I would upgrade the monitor first. The GTX 970 can handle 1440p on most games. The more demanding games may require you to turn down some settings, but things can still look good and run smoothly.
