So, built a pc for the first time today. when I turn it on, windows doesn't boot up - I get this message

"Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might have caused the issue"

So, after looking up the problem, It seems that I have to back up my data from this hard drive and do a clean install of Windows, as this version is trying to boot from old drivers compatible with my old motherboard.

but here's the issue - I pressed the option "launch startup repairs" and it told me it can try to revert back to an older version, so I clicked yes, and now it has said "Attempting repair..." for a long time.

Many people on here have said they have left it on for days, and I don't want to do that. The cancel button doesn't allow me to cancel it, and I'm worried that just pressing the power button will corrupt my hard drive as that will just cut it off while it's trying to repair things.

Does anyone know what I should do? How long should I wait? Would it ruin my hard drive if I turn it off?

Solution
do you have a HDD activity light? if so wait for it to be off, and then kill the power, then plug the drive back into the old system where windows should boot up happily if it still works.

its a 1TB hard drive, there's a lottttt of stuff on there :/ if I press the power button, I'll run the risk of losing everything - this startup repair thing doesn't seem to be doing anything, I'll let it sit for a few more hours but if nothing arises, I guess I have no choice but to press the power button. I fear that I'll lose my data though
