ok so ive been overclocking my i5 4690k and ive been trying to get my chip stable at 4.4ghz and it passed the prime 95 test but when i got in a game it crashed so i keept on bumping up the voltage and finally got my chip stable at 1.277v 4.4ghz. so went on forums and videos and saw that other people got there chip stable at 1.17v-2.4v max. is my chip a bad overclocker. i mean the temps stay fine in games around 64-66c
btw ive got a
msi Z97 pc mate mobo
hyper tx3
evga 80+ 500w

Solution

Got it at 5Ghz as my signature says, but anything further requires too much voltage for me to feel safe at 24/7 usage.
I like keeping my temps below 80.
Voltage increase seems to be exponential to multiplier increase.

At that level, you run the risk of very slow degradation. For example, after 2 years, you might find that's it's no longer stable at its current speed and voltage, requiring you to back off by 100MHz. If you upgrade often, it's no big deal. If you plan on making this CPU a family heirloom, keep it below 1.3 :)

I might upgrade in 3-5 years

Then I would keep it at 4.4GHz - it's not like 100MHz is going to make a noticeable difference.
