Hi guys,
I know this question has been asked many times before, but I didn't find the answers that I need.
My Problem: I have a PC which I got last year and I paid about 305 Dollars for it. It worked good and was enough for working but the I discovered the sin of PC-Gaming ;D. After a while I had played all the potato-games that my PC could manage to run and now I'm at the point where I want to play more advanced games but my PC can't.

These are the parts that are installed:

Case: Corsair Carbide 300r
Power Supply: Corsair HX520W
Motherboard: Intel DX58SO
CPU: Intel i7-920 2.99 GHz
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 275
RAM: Corsair 6Gb XMS DDR3-1600MHz (TR3X6G1600C9)
CPU-Cooler: Noctua NH-U9B SE2 (12.50cm)
Case-Cooling: because of several problems I have only one fan connected (MOBO doesn't support any more)

What I wanted to do was to try overclocking the CPU because I read that it is almost 'made' for it. Then I wanted to get a new GPU and new RAM (this isn't why I'm writing this, but any ideas are welcome).

As you should have found out until now I don't have a single clue how to overclock. I once tried to do it with the Intel Desktop Control Center, at 3.3 Ghz CS:GO didn't work fluent anymore (at 2.99 Ghz it did) and at 3.6 Ghz the PC crashed and I had to reset the setting.

Now I would like to know if the PC could handle the overclock (do I Need a new cooler, can the PSU deliver enough electricity, do I Need new RAM for the overclock?). And if it can, how to do it safe, how long the PC could live with an OC and if it could run newer games.

I hope I didn't write to much and that you can help me soon. If you need more information just ask for it.

Greetings,
Strombo

The 980TI is the fastest of those 3, but it's the previous generation and would require a better PSU. It's also $400-$500. For about the same price you could get a GTX 1070 which is slightly faster and needs a lot less power. Both of those cards would be held back a little by your CPU. You would want to overhaul the CPU and motherboard if you get the 1070.

The GTX 1060 would be your best bet in my opinion - super fast for 1080P, decent for 1440P, a good match for your CPU, and around $250. The RX480 is just slightly slower, but actually does beat the 1060 in a few titles. If you can get a good deal on one, I wouldn't hesitate to pick it instead.

If that's more than you want to spend, the RX-470 is around $180, and would still...

If you are wanting to overclock you will need better cooling than the stock one, also there is no point in overclocking the component that is being bottlenecked by the other components as you will see little or most likely no performance increase. upgrade GPU, RAM, Cooling and then if you're not satisfied you can overclock.

Thanks for the fast answer 010010,
What do you mean by stock cooler. This is a pretty massive cooler-block, not a stock cooler, and it barely fits into the big case. Could you tell me what the idle-temperatures should be? So I can know if I need to turn the fans on the CPU-cooler or if I need new thermal paste or a new cooler as you said.

Sorry i didn't actually look at the cooler you had :pt1cable: Noctua is a very good brand for that sort off stuff so you will be fine with that even when overclocking. The reason you get bad FPS is because you have a very bad GPU; this is not on par with an i7. You should get something like Nvidia: GTX 980/1060/1070/1080 or for AMD: RX 480/R9 390 will be very good and you won't run into performance issues :). Also the RAM is good from Corsair but getting 2x4GB or 1x8GB would be better (Not neccessary though).

You're a hero! That helped me a lot. I thought that I should either get a GTX 1060 or a RX 480. The RAM could get a replacement too. Do you have any tips for a low budget? And could you 'predict' if the 'pimped' PC could play any newer titles (GTA 5 I know it isn't that new, The Witcher 3, Overwatch, Battlefield 1)? :D

If you're on a low budget you're really not going to get Ultra/High consistently at 60FPS on those titles. This being said you can still play these at medium/high 40+FPS even on some old cards. For example i have an HD7770 1GB which is very old and i currently play GTA V at mostly high settings and BF1 at High preset at relativley smooth fps. Though i would not recommend an old card, there are some good ones such as the AMD RX 460. If you are going to be playing these newer titles though it really isn't worth getting a cheaper card, instead just wait till you can afford a newer one or just spend the money you were going to use on RAM for the GPU.
Some cheaper GPU's:
460
R9 280
750ti
Better Cards:
RX 480
1060
R9 390
980ti

Thx a lot, let's just say my budget isn't that low and from the better cards you showed me the best ones (after my opinion) are the 980ti, the 1060 and the RX 480. Which one of these three would you recommend to me? And which one would work better with my rather old motherboard and the other parts?
You already were a great help and mabey this thread is going to be one for others too. But if you could answer this (hopefully) last question that would be just great.
