On my pc, the nvidia display drivers will always crash randomly at the desktop only. What this does to my computer is that it makes the card run at a much lower frequency (405 mhz) and the vram runs much slower as well. It makes games impossible to play and it makes it hard to even watch youtube videos, so it is extremely annoying.

I've done a clean install of the most recent drivers and that hasn't done anything. Any help would be very much appreciated because this is just too fricken annoying.

Solution
As I said - reduce overclock.

If that solves crashing problem, you can try flashing BIOS of the card with some from non OC gigabyte gtx970 models
(just make sure to save original BIOS before doing any flashing).

The temps are fine, we are running at a chilly 27 degrees Celsius at idle.

The driver still crashes and gets recovered even without any overclock.

The exact card is the GIGABYTE GeForce GTX 970 4GB G1 GAMING OC EDITION (taken from newegg)

Well I reduced the clocks and it still says that the driver has crashed and been recovered, but the clocks remain fine. So it may have been an issue with the clocks being too high, but I still get the pop-up, which I can live with for now. Thanks man.
