My hard drive has 4 partitions. The computer does not recognize the partition that has all my documents. It also won't boot. I will install a new hard drive. But I still want to recover some of my files. I will hook up the bad hard drive as an external hard drive. Would someone please recommend which software I should use to recover my files? - preferably software that you have used successfully before for this purpose.

There are many threads on data recovery in the forum. I believe you can check that out as well: http://pcsupport.about.com/od/filerecovery/tp/free-file-recovery-programs.htm
I would advice you to recover all the data on another drive. That way, you will avoid the possibility to overwrite the data on the problematic drive.
Also, keep in mind that in case the drive is 3.5'', you will need a power cord as well, if you want to attach the drive externally.
