GTX 1080 SLI won't max out 100% GPU usage. What's wrong?

Hi all, I'm having a slight issue with my 1080s. they are different manufacturer and I swear that when I first popped the cards in this was NOT an issue, but all of the sudden it is.

Anyways, when I have vsync and all frame limiters off i will go into a game like crysis 3 or battlefield 1 alpha and I'll be getting 45 fps but i'll look and see my gpu usage is only 60-70% on all cards? What could be the cause of that?

I have a 5930k oced to 4.2ghz so I am pretty positive that is not bottlenecking.

Any ideas? I am using EVGA x precision oc

Solution
If you haven't already, update your drivers. Try the latest Beta drivers if you can. There was a bug with latency about a month ago with the drivers. You might also try it without Gsync and see if the problem is with Gsync.

NVIDIA has had lots of issues with their 10xx series cards, especially in SLI. You can compare your problems to the 70+ pages of people's problems here and see if you fall into that group. https://forums.geforce.com/default/topic/941579/geforce-1000-series/gtx-1080-high-dpc-latency-and-stuttering/30/ Some people have solved their problems, while others still have issues. I'm still having trouble with my single GTX 1070. =/

Sadly, bottlenecks happen with EVERY CPU when you have a high end GPU setup for your resolution.

The fact is, at any given time, there is always a bottleneck in your system. It can often be the GPU, and it can be the CPU. It can also be other things such as Vsync, memory and your HDD. It is pretty much impossible for every component to reach maximum usage at the same time. Something is always holding back performance.

That said, it's possible it's SLI, but it may be the game, it may be your resolution, it could be your PSU. You'll need to test and see. I have a single GTX 1070 and a i7 5820k at 4.4Ghz, and I get bottlenecked by the CPU sometimes.

The first thing I'd do is run Futuremarks 3d Mark Firestrike and/or Time Spy and link the results here. Those benchmarks can make it a lot easier to see if something isn't right, as they have lots of data collected from others with similar systems.

Here is a link to my time spy results. Why is my 2nd cards core clock so low? they are different cards but the boost clock is only within about 30 mhz of each other.

This is my score: http://www.3dmark.com/spy/151585

Your score is a lot higher, but looking at the CPU, I have 200 higher, but that can be attributed to my 200mhz higher OC. Your Graphics score is nearly double mine, which is what you'd expect. Your score, compared to others with similar systems does fall within acceptable range, though it may be a little on the lower side of normal. If you are not OCing the GPU's, that is probably all it is.

What are your FPS like in Crysis 3? BF1 is in beta, and not likely even supporting SLI yet, so that's not a good one to look at. Also, what is your resolution?

with everything maxed and 4x msaa i get 60-90 fps in indoor levels and it's pretty smooth. in outdoor levels i get about 40-60fps however it feels like 10 fps. Even tho I have a gsync monitor it just isn't smooth at all. It says i'm getting 60ish but it is so choppy it feels like 20.
