Hi everyone,

long time lurker, first time poster; I need your guys' help! I just got fresh new parts for a new pc:

Intel i3-6100
Asrock H110M DGS
MSI R9 380 4GD5T OC

Everything seems to run fine until I load up my game Overwatch... Within minutes my GPU will heat up to 100C with very minimal action on screen. Eventually my FPS will drop rapidly and my computer will just shutdown. The temp will even slowly rise if I'm just sitting on the main menu. Could it be my PSU not providing enough power or a faulty GPU. This is my PSU (http://www.ncix.com/detail/evga-500w-80-plus-certified-5f-92643.htm).

Here are some images I took using MSI afterburner and HWM (both pics were taken during overheating):

Any input will be greatly appreciated as I am a PC newbie. Thank you all in advance!

Solution

If it's in warranty, return it. If it's not, you have the choice of buying an aftermarket heatsink or fans or getting a new card. I thought you would have notice the fans not spinning haha and that it was you resetting the fan profile. Unfortunately this fix costs time/money unless the fan header isn't plugged in for some reason.
It's probably not your PSU. My guess would be either improperly applied thermal paste between the gpu and the heatsink or inadequate airflow in your case. When it gets hot like this does the heatsink get hot as well? Like if you put your hand up to the back of the computer where the vents are does it feel hot?

I'm not sure about the thermal paste, I did not apply anything to my GPU. The case and vents do not feel hot. Hmmmm I'm curious what it could be now as I was almost sure it was the PSU...

Well the factory could have put too much or too little paste on your card which is why the vents wouldn't be exhausting hot air: the heat isn't being transferred from the chip to the heatsink properly. The speed at which the temp ramps up makes this seem like the most likely issue, unless you've changed the fan profile and they're not spinning fast enough.

If the wire coming out of the fans is plugged into the board of the graphics card where there are 3-4 half-cm pins, then there is no software fix. Might as well take it back, will be a lot easier to return the sooner you do it so that the distributor will still let you exchange it for a new one.

Hi

First time lurker, first time poster.
Just finished work so plase excuse any typos.
If your driver has the option to turn off the the zero decibal fan then do this, when I select this option on my R9 380 the idle temp drops from 79degrees to 47 the frame rates also increase signifcantly under load.
Going to bed now - best of luck :)
