Hi there,

I have just ordered a new computer (thus a new motherboard), and I intend on formatting my old HDD and reinstalling W7 onto my new SSD.

If I boot to the W7 disk and format the old HDD (and) SSD to install windows, will the product key still work? Do both drives need to be installed in the same computer?

Or... for I fear, do I need to buy another copy of W7

Solution
If it is a reusable full retail copy of Windows, yes it will.
If it was an OEM install (one time) it will be tied to the motherboard you originally installed it on, and will not work with new hardware.
During installation, I recommend only having your SSD plugged in just in case there is any issue with compatibility, or if Windows decides to spread it's files onto the HDD.
