Replaced MOBO and PSU, still no POST. Dead CPU?

Built this PC about 5 months ago. About 1 month ago started to have an issue starting PC (had to press power button multiple times to boot). Then a last week I went to start it and it powered on (fans and LEDs) then shutoff and would repeat until turning off the PSU. I then replaced the CMOS battery, jumped the power switch, disconnected everything, removed RAM and tried single stick, removed MOBO to power on on cardboard and no change. Still would cycle. Bought a new PSU (EVGA P2 750), no changes. Replaced MOBO, MSI Z170 SLI. Now it powers on (fans and LEDs have power) but will not POST (no display, no bios) and has a constant red CPU LED on. Weird thing was that it was cycling (the new Mobo) with the new PSU, but powers on without cycling with the original PSU. Hoping it's not the CPU, but I'm running out of options. Any help would be appreciated, thank you.

System:
I5-6500 w/stock cooler
MSI Z170 SLI Plus replaced with MSI Z170 SLI
Gigabyte GTX 970 G1 Gaming
EVGA 750 GQ replaced with G2 (nothing seems to be wrong with GQ)

Don't worry about it. :) Happy to help any way that I can.

I remember seeing Amazon on the video clip, you could've easily been sent a dead board or one that died along the way.

It will all get sorted in the long run.

Thanks for expressing you gratitude, I only hope some would do the same for me if I was in your situation.

Please do let us know how it all turns out, just think how awesome it will be once you get that homescreen up & running. :) Patience & Self-Control.

And if you feel like ranting/venting out about MSI or the Seller on Amazon, just type away, type away.

Enjoy your weekend & hear from you soon.

The warning signs of having to reboot multiple times for the PC to work should have rung alarm bells.
Did you at any point, when it was still working, monitor the temps or notice any usual spikes/system hangs after booting up multiple times & finally getting it working?

If you replaced the mobo + PSU then most likely CPU is at fault.

I'm assuming because you had the stock cooler you didn't OC the CPU or do anything special/out of the ordinary with it?

This was my first build so learning curve has been steep. Looking back I should have looked more into the power button issue, but it was intermittent. You would have to press the power button multiple times to boot, but once on there were no noticeable performance issues. I originally thought it was a PSU issue because it would not re-boot when it would go into standby (this is what started last week). It would start the boot-shutdown cycle. That's when I purchased another PSU with no change. It wouldn't boot at all after that. So after more troubleshooting, I purchased another MOBO. I was able to get power, but not post or display and the CPU led was solid. I then tried the original MOBO again and was able to get power, but it would also not post. This happens with both PSU, as well.

And yes, no oc'ing / or anything special.

No, I upgraded to an i5-6600k and added a 100i GTX with the same result. I'm baffled.

Current setup:
I5-6600k w/ h100i GTX (new)
MSI Z170A SLI Plus (original)
EVGA P2 750w (new)

Tried the I5-6500 and I5-6600k with the new MOBO and also got the red CPU LED and power to the fans/cooler.

While on cardboard, I connected the 8-pin CPU cable and the 24-pin cable. Connected on the motherboard is the stock Intel cooler and RAM in dimm 2 and 4. I have also tried a single stick in each dimm slot with no success.

Here is a video of me testing the setup with mostly all new components (CPU, MOBO, and PSU).

Sorry I couldn't get back earlier.

Try with Motherboard + PSU + CPU + CPU Cooler (no RAM).

Turn it on, do you get 3 beeps or still see the CPU LED on?

If you get 3 beeps, then turn it off, install 1 stick of RAM and see if it works/acces BIOS, if it does, then downlaod BIOS software for that CPU from the MSI website directly.

Then next stage is try GPU in either PCI-E slot, if you get this far.

The fact power is getting to ALL the components is a good thing, most likely there is a bad connection/faulty components somewhere, you just need to eliminate all factors.

Try these steps and let me know at what stage it fails, we will try something else next time.

Then I would take a close look at the CPU, even though it's a new one you bought only recently.

Also check the CPU socket on the motherboard check for any obstructions, turn the board over and look for signs of discoloration around the pathways, inspect the capacitors (cylindrical/metel thing) for bulding, etc.

I do not have the time to theck for CPU/motherboard incompatibility, but one of those, or the connection between the 2, is what's wrong.

Sorry I cannot provide a more direct response, but I strongly believe this is where you should focus your attention on.

Can you possible take some photos, or upload another video, of the CPU pins side and the mobo socket as well, get a close-up.

I will inspect the current, uploaded video for any pins that may need a jumper in a different location or something, maybe check the motherboard manual for any pin-connector/jumper settings that could be out of whack.

Keep me/us posted!

Will do, I don't expect to find anything as I just received the new CPU Wednesday and the motherboard last Thursday. Think I'll give MSI support a call tomorrow as well, pretty ridiculous to have a board possibly die in 5 months time and the replacement arrive DOA (as it seems to be).

Yes it does seem ridiculous, here is MSI's email address:

[ msihelp@msi.com ]

Or you could fill out their online form.

They could've very well provided you with a reconditioned/returned board that 'checked out OK' by their quality team but someone missed something crucial.

And/or maybe the board got an unexpected current surge from static shock; who knows.

I had the opportunity to recheck the video you sent, everything seems to be in it's place; I wouldn't bother trying to remove the VRM/MOSFET heatsinks (in the video - above & left of the CPU socket) to see if one is blown underneath as this may void the warranty.

Just send it back & write a very angry email about how disappointed you are with their service and the massive inconvenience caused by their incompetence, and see what kind of 'compensation' they are willing to do/give. Always ask because you don't ask, you don't get.

Who knows, they may send you an upgraded board, send a voucher to spend with approved retailers for another product.

Also, ask them if they can also provide proof of the Quality Control Testing of the new board they will send out to you, to guarantee it's functionality as you have "lost faith in their ability to adequately provide a functioning replacement". :)

Good luck, keep us posted!

Reading my mind lol.

The new board was purchased from MSI through Amazon, not an RMA. That being said the packaging was far from sufficent. Just a cardboard box and a single "air cell" thing. So possibly damaged by shipment. Either way I'll attempt to sort this out with MSI. Regardless I am very disappointed with a board dying in such a short amount of time and the other showing up dead. Depending on how MSI rectifies this, I may be converting to another manufacturer (Asus) lol.

Also, I can't tell you enough how much I appreciate your time in helping me sort this out. I cannot express my gratitude enough. Your support has been vital in keeping me sane through this whole troubleshooting process lol. I'll let you know how this turns out. Thanks again.
