Hello guys,
I have a "little" problem with my Asus RT-AC88U router (and it was a present)

I have a 1 Gbs connection internet, PPPoE. I've setup the router with user and pass, thru the normal setup steps, nothing change in setting (all default) and I'm limited on 100 Mb on WAN.
Now, I have the last update, firmware version 3.0.0.4.380.3941.
I have another router, RT-AC68U and it's working very well, just change the cable, no other setting and it's working, I have around 800-900 Mbs in tests.
The router, out of the box, was with firmware 3.0.0.4.380_664 but with the same problem on WAN port.
Could be a problem with the router? a defect or something on WAN? I don't know what to change, from 2 days just google and forums :(...I discussed with the guys from ISP and from what they told me it's everything ok in their system and on local equipment from my home.
I've put also Merlin 380_61 and in sysinfo section on WAN, I have 100 mb full duplex.
Thanks! and really appreciate your help...
The last option is to change the router with a new one :(
Have a nice day!

Solution
It generally is not firmware in the router. The speed of the ethernet is done by the chips themselves at even a lower level...it is still sorta firmware just not the kind you can update.

I would try other ethernet cables. Some cable are partially defective but work well enough for some devices but not others. You want a cable that is made from copper not copper clad aluminum and is either cat5e or cat6.

Check to be sure the router is set to auto on the wan port and is not set to 100m....the default is auto.

It would be rare to have damaged the wan port in the router but it is a possibility. You could plug it into the lan port of your ac68u just to see if it will come up.

Thank you for your fast answer!
After work, I will check. It was my opinion also, the router to be broken....to have 100 and not 1000 :\
I don't know now where to check exactly (what section) if the WAN it's set on 100, but I will find it...
The cable, from what I remember it's cat5e and in a good condition (I changed it ~ 1 year ago)
I will try also to connect my old AC68U and from LAN to connect to WAN at AC88U, I will test that option.
I have an ONT from my ISP (to connect the fiber and from that I have my cable connected to router), I will try also to connect the router with the cable from the box and test again.
Hope to find a solution... thank you again! ;)

it's working ... after a few tests, with the old router, ohter cable...I manage to solve it.
The problem was with one of the RJ-45 plug !! but the strage thing was...that worked on the old router.
Maybe on the new one was a problem with one of the pins...no contact.
Thank you for your ideas and for your time! Great people on this forum!
have a nice weekend!

Im having a somewhat similar problem with my RT-AC88 router. After a full reboot it goes to very slow speeds when wired. However If I do a hard reset of the router sometimes it will negotiate a correct speed and work at 950 mbps. Connected wired to the modem my PC works at full speed.
I'll try buying a new CAT-6 cable but its bizarre why it works only after a hard reset of the router.

This is one of those strange things you see with a defective cable. Some devices are more tolerant of cables that are just slightly out of conformance with the specifications. It can be as simple as very small crack in one of the wires...most times in ends. Unless you spend huge money for a special meter there is no way for a general user to tell if a cable really meets certifications or not.

All you can really do is try other cables making sure not to just buy the cheapest you can find on places like amazon....although I did buy some 5ft cable from the dollar store because I just could not resist and they seem ok.

After than you have few options. You can try newer firmware but you seldom see bugs related to ethernet. You could try the asus-merlin image but that I doubt it will make a difference. Then again if cable and firmware don't fix it you are left with a defective router as the cause which is not cheap

Well I bought a new Cat-6 cable today and it did not resolve the issue. I then swapped in a brand new ASUS RT-3100 device and it works perfectly.
The RT-AC88 is going back to Amazon. Either its defective or there is a fundamental flaw with the chipset for the wired ports. The AC-88 consistently gets a low speed immediately after negotiating an IP address after rebooting my cable modem. I've reported this to ASUS support as well.
