Laptop shuts down while searching for updates

I recently picked up at Lenovo T420 for some classes I'm taking in school. It came preloaded with Win7 Pro SP1. So when I set it up to begin the long process of searching and then installing all updates, I made sure all the power settings were set correctly to never turn off/sleep/shut down hard disk or anything else while plugged into AC power and left it and went to bed. Got up this morning and it was turned off.

When I checked Windows update I found what I had already suspected...no updates found or installed. When I checked event viewer, I found the machine had shut down unexpectedly (already knew that though from the reboot) but when I searched the code (Event 41), I couldn't find anything meaningful for it as far as a cause. So I'm not sure what might be going on with it. The only thing I can possibly think of is potentially a heat issue (RealTempGT clocks the CPU temp between 60-70C at all times while surfing the web and having Windows Update running), but other than that I'm not sure what else to check. Can anyone provide any assistance? If any information would be helpful, please let me know and I will provide it...thank you.

70 C for the CPU should have been fine, I have worked on many T420 systems and most are in the 80C range. During stress tests it can hit 90C (before new thermal paste), and most are stable at that temp. 10C drop is nice though, glad it's stable.

Yes it has done it multiple times since this morning when I found it like that initially. I turned it on again and in the middle of reading the event viewer and letting it search for updates again, it did it right in front of my face...just dimmed the screen like it was being shut down, then it turned itself off. It happened once again after that and since then I haven't been messing with it too much. I took the keyboard off to get a look at the internal fan and it looks clean. I didn't have time to completely disassemble it to take a look at the thermal paste on the CPU itself but I will be checking that later. I just wasn't sure what else to check really besides that. I rebooted into BIOS and loaded all default settings and am kind of at a loss as to what else I might be able to try after this point.

I took everything apart yesterday and cleaned off the old thermal paste and put a new drop on there and so far it seems to be running about 10C cooler on average. Left the machine up and running searching for updates last night and got up this morning to find it still running. Hoping this is the only issue.
