Samsung and my carrier are offering refunds/exchanges, but no ETA on exchange date.

My wife is loving her new Note 7 but it does get alarmingly hot when charging with the included USB type C cable and "Adaptive Fast Charging" adapter, so we unplug it when it gets hot and let it cool before resuming the charge, but this is a bit of a pain.

Now, I won't take anything as a definite fix, but could going out and buying a lower amp charger cut down on the heat build up or would it likely not matter?

Solution
Definitely.
Try something ~1-2A.

Unfortunately fast charging, although convenient, puts a lot of heat into the battery. It's very rare to catch fire of explode, but heat is the #1 killer of battery life.

I think the issue the OP is referencing is that the Note 7's are in fact....exploding. All devices outside of China being recalled due to a battery cell issue. I would recommend either not using it at all, or use a lower amperage charger and charge it in a location where it cannot start a fire if the worst happens. Note that the failure rate is minuscule, 25 or 30 units per million, but ALL SOLD UNITS ARE AFFECTED.

0.0014% is the actual percentage of affected phones so extremely low chance here of burning it up, better chance winning $60,000 in my state. Your carrier is going to get in touch with you and also Samsung is offering a $25 gift card, and exchange for whatever accessories you purchased. I contacted Verizon about my phone, I'm not having the issues you are with my Note 7 but once the new units are in I'm going to go ahead and just switch it out. Better to get a new Note 7 than take the risk, I havent been doing any charging overnight and dont need to because of fast charge. Samsung recommends not using any charger besides the one that ships, I'd follow that until you receive your new device.
