Okay so I'm completely new to building computers and I've made an account on this website so i could ask about this. this will be my first time actually doing anything involving this so I felt like I need to ask.

First off I have an old Dell Optiplex GX280 SMT (the mid tower) that does not work anymore, the hard drive is shot and I'm fairly certain the MOBO is fried as well. I was wondering if i would be able to completely gut the whole thing and just use the case itself for a new build involving more modern parts, I already have a build in mind but as I said I'm completely new to this so I don't know if this would even work.

Those are the parts that I have in mind.

This will be a gaming build but I don't plan on going overboard with it as I do not have the money to do so, hence why I'm asking if i can use the Dell Optiplex case to build it with. Any help would be appreciated. I'd prefer not having to modify the case or get a new one.

Chuck it. Trying to reuse the case is going to cause more problems then it's worth. You can get a better build with a case for about what you are looking to spend.

If $550 is too much over the budget drop the cpu down to the i5 6400.

Okay so basically its worthless? cause i wasn't looking to make a high power gaming rig I just wanted to build something that would run games like Skyrim or Dishonored

Yep the case is basically worthless. Very poor cooling/air flow and proprietary front panel connections make it very difficult to deal with and if memory serves those old dell cases also used a proprietary form factor so a motherboard with a standard Atx form factor may not fit without modification of the case.

Well that's just lovely. Oh well I guess I'll just add a CPU Cooler to that list you provided and I'll work my way from there
