Hey guys,

So I really need help. Let me start out with my computer specs:

Intel i7 6700K
MSI GTX 970 GAMING 4G NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970 4GB
MSI / H170 Gaming M3 MOBO
Cooler Master V450 Semi-Modular PSU
Scythe Mugen 4 PCGH Edition Cooler
Kingston Technology HyperX FURY 32GB RAM
Samsung SH-224DB/BEBE 250GB SSD
2x Western Digital Blue WD10EZEX 1TB

A week ago I was editing 4k footage in premiere. I was playing Overwatch with my FPS cap set to 120 (it would NEVER drop below 120 FPS). But a few days ago, my framerates dropped to 30-50, and premiere wouldn't run properly. I was even struggeling with 1080P footage (which usually isn't any problem at all). My whole PC just felt "slower". Booting, running programs, etc. Editing video's is my job, and currently i'm not able to edit anything.

So I tried a lot. First I checked my Task Manager to see if the CPU or memory was running at ridiculous amounts, nothing. Everyting looked fine. I did a scan using MalwareBytes, no results at all. I updated drivers to my GPU, nothing.

Next I did a clean install of Windows. I backed up my important files and completely re-installed Windows. This also didn't solve anything. Then I looked at my harddrives using HDtune. Results were good, no errors whatsoever. I tried running Windows with the 1 TB drives disconnected to see if maybe they were bad. But just running on my SSD also didn't work. I checked drivers for the SSD and they were all up to date.

I tested the RAM strips by removing them and testing them one by one. Nothing.

Finally I completely broke apart my PC, cleaned it, and re-assembled it. It wasn't dusty or dirty at all, but it was worth a shot. But even this didn't work.

Here is what's driving me insane. This afternoon I turned on my PC and noticed it ran pretty 'snappy'. So I played a few games of Overwatch and it felt like butter! 200+ FPS and no drops at all. I tried Premiere and it worked like a charm! But after an hour or so, Overwatch started running at 30-50 FPS and now I am back where I started.

I DON'T know what is causing this and it's driving me crazy. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Kind regards

The slow mode switch can be a booger for many people. According to a user manual for a similar mobo (msi z97) it's used for people using ln2 extreme cooling on their heavily overclocked systems. It's supposed to allow the cpu to boot with a minimal clockspeed to ensure stability under extreme overclocking scenarios and prevent it from failing to boot.

"This switch is used for LN2 cooling solution, that provides the extreme overclockingconditions, to boot at a stable processor frequency and to prevent the system fromcrashing" from one of their user manuals for the msi z97 gaming 7. I'm not sure why it would need to be included on an h series board though. Typically when people are going with extreme overclocking conditions they're not...

Assuming you are using Windows, search 'disk cleanup' in all programs and launch it. It cleans useless files in your computer, so it should speed up your PC. If not, tell me, I have another trick up my sleeve.

As I said, I have another trick. Go and download 360 software. Just Google 360 security and download. Pretty straightforward from there. The features included are disk cleanup, virus scan, speed boost and so on. Worth a try and you can delete at any time.

Did another clean install, this time on my 1 TB HDD to exclude the problem was coming from my SSD. It's still there :(
I did some reading and found a program called HWinfo. In this program I found that a specific part of my CPU ( I think) is running pretty high.

You can see the image here. As you can see Core 0 1 2 and 3 C7 Residency are running at pretty high percentages. I have no clue what they mean but they sure are different from the other numbers. Am I on to something here?

Running out of options.

Security 360 also didn't help me.

I found out the C7 residency thing is normal. It has something to do with sleep state effectiveness, something like that. Nothing that can explain my problems unfortunatly.

I (sort off) fixed it! In my BIOS settings I disabled "Intel Adaptive Thermal Control". When running my PC with this feature disabled, my CPU runs at full speed again. Temperatures in idle state are between 25-32 degrees, so no signs of overheating.

I read somewhere that the "Intel Adaptive Thermal Control" has something to do with the Slow Mode switch on the motherboard.. Not sure how they are connected just yet, but i'll look into that some more.

For now my computer runs as fast and smooth as it used to, so at least i'm able to open up Premiere pro and finish some video's :)
