I've just upgraded my CPU to an i7 4790k 4.0ghz from a n i5 4460 3.2ghz and it's dropping more frames and seemingly running worse than the i5.

My build
Current build:
CPU: Intel i7 4790K
Mobo: Asus K30AD_M31AD_M51AD_M32AD
RAM: 16GB
GPU: GTX 1080 (Gigabyte)
PSU: Corsair 750
2 x SSD (1 x 240GB and 1 x 960GB)
Windows 10

I also upgraded the cooler when I changed the CPU and the temps seem fine, running around 35-40 degrees at idle.

If anyone has any ideas why this would be I'd really appreciate some advice.

Thank you

EDIT: I'm not overclocking the CPU

What? Really? I strongly dont believe an i7 4790k will bottleneck any GPU for the next 3 to 4 years.

What made you say that?

Hi thanks for replying.

Most of the games I've tried, Witcher 3, Crysis 3 and Project Cars notably but none of the games, I have tried seem to run any better, I thought they would.

I updated the bios on my mobo when I installed the new CPU and re-installed the graphics drivers after but neither seem to make a difference. Do you know I should do anything else after changing a CPU?

What resolution are you playing at? Only cpus that do not bottleneck the gtx1080 at 1080p resolution are the 6700k and 6800k i beleive.

If you want to avoid bottleneck you have to play at higher resolution 1440p or 4k where cpu is not has important.

Still need to check your temps while playing.

Did you reinstall your OS when you did the CPU swap? Usually you want to reinstall the OS when you install either a new cpu or new motherboard. A swap of such a major hardware can mess with the OS sometimes.
