I was wondering whether Toshiba Qosmio X70 has an MBR or GPT configuration by default? I posted on another thread about changing my bios from AHCI to SATA, as since I have done this my computer is running very slow, and takes forever to boot up. Sometimes I need to use Boot Disk Installer just to get it to boot up. Also, I am unable to access diskpart from the cmd prompt even with admin access. The recovery options don't work (I think the computer is unable to see or access the recovery partition. I am also unable to use the disk management tool from within Windows 8 itself. I downloaded MiniTool Partition Wizard Free, but after installling, when trying to run the program, it simply closes. Have been searching the internet for an answer to why this is happening for over a week now, but have thus far been unable to find a solution. I am wondering whether somehow I have inadvertantly changed the default (MBR/GPT) disk configuration. Any help with this issue would be greatly appreciated. :)

I am running Windows 8 on the Toshiba Qosmio. System has 16GB of ram.

Windows 8 uses GPT if it sees a UEFI bios. If you have bios set to MBR it won't be able to see windows

I think you should be using AHCI

From the searches I did, It seems your Toshiba is UEFI by default. MOst Motherboards since 2010 have been UEFI, its just Win 7 didn't support it so many use MBR still. GPT is better.

You probably best fresh install win 8 and start again. Make sure drives set to AHCI and Boot method set to UEFI and it should go back to normal

If you converting back to GPT you would need to do a clean install anyway: http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/2299-clean-install-windows-8-a.html

Hi Colif,

Thanks for your reply. The problem is I don't have any media to do a clean install of Windows. My recovery USB is not recognised and neither is the recovery sector on the hard drive. I did download a Window 8.1 iso, to upgrade (as the upgrade option via Windows Store isn't working for me), but it told me I can't upgrade using that path (?).

Also, I changed the bios (InsydeH20 1.00) from AHCI and now there is no option for HDD controller showing up in the bios so I can't change it back again :(

A) Do I need to format the c: to do a clean install?
B) Will it work using the Windows 8.1 iso? (My computer came preloaded with Windows 8)

I gather if I do this, I will lose all my manufacturers software?

Thanks again for your help.
