Hello folks,

I have a 1440p monitor (G-sync, 1ms, 144Hz) coming next week. I currently have an eVGA GTX 970 SC. Should I look at selling this GPU and picking up a GTX 1070? I looked at some benches of the 970 (Witcher 3, GTA V, DOOM) and it seems to get 30 ~ 60 fps in some games.

Will G-sync help smooth things a bit under 60 fps?

Thanks!

Solution

yes, its a bit long in the tooth

time to overclock if you have not done so
The 970 will not push 1440p at even 60fps at higher settings, the max you'd go with is 1080p 144hz with that card. ;)
G-Sync will only help if it is stable and constantly above 30-35fps, as it ceases to function or does so very poorly below that mark.
I recommend getting a 1070 soon, and getting the Dell S2716DG, it is an amazing value monitor and will be a perfect fit for the 1070 with G-Sync.
Note that the 1070 is essentially twice the power of the 970, so I'd definitely sell it and trade it in for an upgrade, as it will offer a great gaming experience. :)

Thanks for the input, folks.

Funny that the Dell S2716DG was mentioned; that is the unit I have ordered (on sale).

Well, I posted my GTX 970 for sale yesterday, and it sold the same day. I ordered a Gigabyte GTX 1070 G1 Gaming. It was on sale, as well ($550 CAD, plus tax). The wife was a little worked up until I showed her some recovered cost from selling the 970, lol. I hope it was a good choice.

Guessing with even cheap air you should be able to hit 4.4-4.5. Sandy are good OCers.

I have same gpu/monitor combo and like it. Only thing I've noticed is the gigabyte software sometimes forgets your overclock setting (may relate to updating driver). On the monitor, turn off deep sleep and check the calibration section of tftcentral for monitor-side color adjustment and brightness.

get a cryorig H7 +1! hate the 212, they are ugly, loud and low quality.

Overclock that baby but don't sweat it too much, at 1440p your card should be doing most of the work. but you do need that OC for CPU dependent games.

1070+1440p were made for each other, enjoy your new gaming experience!

Thanks for the information folks. I can't seem to find an H7 available in Canada. Otherwise, I have seen online that an OC'd 2500k can easily compete with the modern Intel CPUs. I'm really looking forward to the upgrade (1070 + S2716DG); I currently have a 7 year old 24' Logitech monitor @ 60Hz.
