My friend said that I should just go with the gtx 1080 since AMD cards eats a lot of power and performs slower than the NVIDIA cards, but I just heard news of the RX 490 about to be released this coming November 15, 2016 so I decided to wait till the RX 490 comes out with benchmarks instead of buying the gtx 1080 but I would like to hear everyone's knowledge regarding Nvidia and AMD Graphics cards pros and cons in driver updates as well and advantages and disadvantages of their vid cards.

Solution
If you can wait, do it. I generally prefer NVidia as I think they release drivers for new games usually quicker than AMD but the latest generation of AMD cards are very good hardware. AMD need a really competitive high end card as there current cards are only really good for 1080p 60Hz so hopefully the 490 will deliver. Even if it doesn't beat the 1080 it might mean NVidia drop the price a little once there is some competition.

Yeah, I do like how the rx 480 can perform near the same as the 1070 on some dx 12 games :D. The new RX 490 will probably be the new sweet spot for 1080p @144hz and the entry level gpu for 1440p gaming. @144hz

The 480 trades blows with the 1060 in DX12, only with Vulkan does the 480 get a real lead on the 1060. The problem is I don't seem many games adopting Vulcan.

where did you hear it? officially AMD probably have nothing new (after RX480) until Q2 2017 time frame.

which DX12 games RX480 can match 1070 performance? but then again this is problem with AMD cards. they need async compute to increase their utilization. and we won't see many games going DX12....well unless they were sponsored. heck even steam version of quantum break have DX11 support. and we thought that was DX12 exclusive title.

AMD is usually weaker than NVIDIA, but this latest generation is on par with NVIDIA and better while using Vulkan.
The RX480 improves performance by 40%(+/-) when using Vulkan, but on DX12, it matches the performance of the 1060.
For the 490, I don't think it would be stronger than the 1080, it's probably gonna be about 25%(?) weaker, but also be maybe $100 cheaper. I think for the price of a 1070, you'd be able to get a bit more than the 1070.(If you buy the RX490)
AMD is playing the budget game this year, and it doesn't seem like they want to beat NVIDIA in the high-end.

I hope the RX 490 is gonna be in between the gtx 1070 and 1080 since g-sync monitors are ridiculously expensive.

That's how I think it'll be.
