I recently upgraded from i7 860 to i5 6600K leaving me with an unused MOBO, CPU and 8 GIG ram.
In another machine I use as a media server, headless HP 8000 Elite with q9505 Core 2 Quad, 4 gig ram.Thinking of swapping it out with the i7 860 but looking at the match up I don't really see the advantage seeing the work involved in the swap and then reinstalling the OS?. The media server is just that. No games or anything. Just serves up video and runs some video conversion apps. Is it worth the swap? Opinions?
Thanks

Same clock speed
but half the Cache.

Q9550: 2.83 GHz, 12 MB Cache - http://ark.intel.com/products/33924/Intel-Core2-Quad-Processor-Q9550-12M-Cache-2_83-GHz-1333-MHz-FSB

Q9505: 2.83 GHz, 6 MB Cache - http://ark.intel.com/products/42920/Intel-Core2-Quad-Processor-Q9505-6M-Cache-2_83-GHz-1333-MHz-FSB

That explains the difference in PassMark scores, however, let's take it a step further:

i7 860 = 5089
Q9550 = 4043
Q9505 = 3648

Udagoogie,

According to...
http://www.anandtech.com/bench/product/50?vs=108

As you can see, both CPUs (the Q9550 and the i7 860) don't perform very differently. As for video, in "SYSMark 2007 - Video Creation" they're tied, in "DivX 6.8.5 Encode (Xmpeg 5.0.3)" the Q9550 leads, whereas in "x264 HD Encode Test - 1st pass - x264 0.59.819" it's the i7 that leads, though in both cases not by a lot. Switching CPUs is probably not worth the trouble, IMO.

Udagoogie,

According to PassMark scores - http://www.cpubenchmark.net/ - the i7 860 has 39.5% more horsepower than the Q9505, which makes a very compelling argument in favor of swapping out the parts. Also, you'd be running 8 GB memory instead of 4 GB, and you wouldn't need to reinstall the OS; just install the chipset / motherboard drivers and reactivate your OS.

Thanks all. The current MOBO for the 9505 is what ever the Business HP 8000 Elite had. Limited in the BIOS options and doesn't seem to be an overclock option. The MOBO for the i7 860 is a Gigabyte GA-P55m-UD2 and has a lot more tweaking options but is an old model. Same memory so maybe I'll try just increasing the 4 gig to 8 gig and see if that helps any. That's easiest to do. It's currently running Windows 10 from the free upgrade from Win 7. Don't know if re activing will go on the changed MOBO. I'm ok with reinstalling Win7 and leave it at that. Worked OK as a media server before.
