I have 8 Gigs of Ram in my laptop, but it only shows 4 as INSTALLED

I've looked this problem up, but it seems like most people have a different problem where it shows only a certain amount as useable. My computer doesn't even seem to notice when I change out the ram to be higher, it just stays at 4 gigs of installed memory (3.91 useable). Can anybody help me?

This is exactly what I was going to say first. 32 bit os can only handel up to 4 gb of memory whereas 64 BIT can theoreticaly handel up to 16 exobytes of memory, though I have heard manufacturers like AMD limiting that to around 256 Terrabites of RAM.

Try installing all of the motherboard drivers, and try to reseat the ram multiple times in different slots. Maybe the RAM went bad? How many ram slots does the motherboard have? try taking out both sticks of ram and then test the ram on all of the slots to see if it boots. one stick at a time. if it boots on one slot but not the other then chances are the ram slot is bad.

Then why didn't you say it, although it does not fix the issue.

You answer questions with nonsequiturs, how does your appreciation of memory capacities help you if the OP won't disclose the motherboard or computer model.

Sticks can be bad, some motherboards cannot handle specific memory, and some motherboards have memory limits below what you might expect.

The best approach to figure this out is to know your exact motherboard model and your exact memory module models to see if they are compatible at 2x4GB or 1x8GB (whichever he has).

When you bought this laptop, how much RAM was installed?
What specific OS was installed?
Was it 32bit or 64bit?
Have you changed the OS since you bought this?
If so, to what, and how?
