I'm not sure how to categorise this as I'm unsure what the cause of the problem could be, so I decided to use the "PC gaming" category because it seems pretty broad.

I'll list the specs of my PC upfront:
Mobo: ASUS Z170 pro gaming
CPU: intel i5 6600k
GPU: GTX 980
RAM: 32GB Kingston HyperX DDR4
PSU: Corsair GM 750M

I have built this PC almost a year ago, and after some initial troubleshooting in previous threads I made here it's worked great for a long time. one week ago however, on friday, overwatch started to freeze up every couple of seconds. every freeze lasted a half to a full second, and when I tried some other games I got the same result. One week later(I went to camp last week) the issue still persists. I have also been experiencing audio issues since I got back: the audio from any and all applications occasionally glitches out for at least half a second, up to three seconds.

At first I though the problem might be my hard drive, as it's older than the rest of my pc(may 2014) and has had some issues in the past. I thought this might be the cause of the issue because when I tried rust, which is installed on my SSD, it worked fine. however when I tried battlefield 1 on my SSD, it had constant hiccups none the less. these hiccups however only occurred when I was pressing the right mouse button and whether I was using it to aim or to throw an explosive didn't matter. Later, the issue was seemingly gone and I was able to play a couple of battles, but when I tried to play again two hours later the issue was worse: every time I aimed down my sights the game would freeze up entirely for multiple seconds, making aiming absolutely impossible.

so far the only two games that don't have any issues are Rust and Elite: Dangerous, which are respectively installed on my SSD and HDD.

My CPU is always under heavy load while playing the games that have this stutter issue, often pushing 100% load. Rust usually takes up about 50%, but I have no idea what is normal on rust for this processor. can anyone compare this?

Lastly I would like to thank everyone who has helped me with my numerous issues so far, and everyone who wants to take the time and effort of helping me now. I wouldn't be gaming anymore if it werent for you people.

I am running windows 10.

I tried to play battlefield 1 again, and while the GPU and CPU temperatures remained normal at a maximum of 65 and 45 degrees celsius respectively, the processor load slowly raised during play, until eventually the processor was at a constant 99% load, of which the game used between 87% and 90%.

it's unfortunately very unpredictable: in my post I mentioned getting freezes every time I scoped in, which happened right at the start of the game. this time however it took some time for any lag to start appearing at all.

When I tried no man's sky it took a little bit before lag spikes started to occur, but they never got quite as bad as in BF1. this, again, shows how irregular the performance is: when I played no man's sky earlier, lag spikes would occur every few seconds, right from the start.
