EVGA GeForce GTX 970 FTW+ ACX2.0+ GAMING Graphics Card - 4GB priced at 200GBP

Vs

ASUS GeForce® GTX 1060 STRIX OC Gaming Edition Graphics Card - 6GB priced at 300GBP

Is the price difference for the 1060 worth paying?

Thanks.

other specs - i5 4670k with 16gb ram. Currently game at 1080p hope to upgrade to better resolution monitor in future.

The Asus turbo is a blower style, and some find this undesirable as it affords slightly higher temps in a single card. It's best used in sli or crossfire setups as the gpu heat is exhausted out of the case, not drawn into the upper card, which raises the upper card temps. Blower types usually tend to be noisier as the single squirrel cage fan spins a lot faster than the much larger shroud fans. Blowers also tend to be cheaper for these reasons.

The difference in low end 1060's and upper 970s is still noticeable. For as much as you can OC a 970, the discrepancy between that and a 980 is still there. And the 980 bumps heads with a 1060. Most games you'd not see any difference unless the gpu is pushed hard though, a 970 and 980 running...

Both the 970 and 1060 do very well at 1080p. The 1060 is the more powerful of the 2 and can have more ram, depending on the model. In most games, you'll find the 970 is adequate for 1440p /60Hz and the 1060 is better. But. That'll be as far as it goes. If you want to play the more gpu intensive games at 1440p and max out settings, the 1060 can still come up short and you'll need to run it at high settings, not maxed ultra. To run 1440p flat out on almost every game, you'll need a 1070 or better. But for 1080p /60Hz or even 1080p /144Hz, the 1060 will be the best option. Not by much though.

The 970 is still a very capable card for 1080p /60Hz. My Asus 970 can handle Metal Gear Solid V at max ultra and 4k render and still see solid 59-60fps. It would struggle at 1440p at the same detail settings.

If you are earnest about moving up to 1440p or better, you'll have to decide if buying a lower grade card now is going to be worth the price when replacing it later with the new monitor. I have no issues with running 2x plain jane 1080p /60Hz monitors, don't feel the need for 1440p, even if it does look better. So, where do your priorities lie.

the 10 series is no joke man, i just put the evga 1070 superclocked with acx 3.0 in my machine which replaced an asus gtx 970 turbo and it made a night and day difference. i play a lot of h1z1 at absolute max settings and am getting 80-90 fps

Thanks for the replies, how do the cheaper much lower clocked 1060s hold out against the higher end 970s, the price difference drops by 60gbp on the Asus GeForce® GTX 1060 TURBO - 6GB Graphics Card.

It's only above @ 70% that the extra horsepower really makes a difference

Thanks guys deciding against a £300 1060 when you can get 980ti for £335 new, I'm currently trying to land a new MSI GeForce GTX 1060 Gaming X 6G card on eBay with a best offer I think I'll get him down to 240/250. Is this a decent 1060? It's slower than the asus strix but potentially over £50 cheaper and I guess the difference isn't worth that much money.

Thanks.

Ps I'm upgrading from a 660ti. I only plan to play battlefield 1 atm.

Yes, the MSI Gaming X is a nice card. It's not slower if you OC it. ;)

I ended up randomly going against nvidia for the first time in a long time and getting a sapphire nitro 480RX 4gb it was only £200 saved me a lot of money. It seems to be more than enough power for what I need tbh considering a 660ti has lasted me this long.
