Hello!

6-month-old Corsair Rm650x PSU started squealing under GPU load, after the install of new MSI GTX 1070 Gaming X graphics card.

It did/does it with the old HD 6870 and GTX 970, and even when idling, but in these cases it's only audible when you press your ear really close. I noticed this before and assumed it was normal.

However the whine that appears in the PSU when the GTX 1070 draws load is rather excessive and can be heard within a few meters of the desk the closed case is standing under.

The 1070 whines at an acceptable level, not annoying or loud, but in the same rhythm as the PSU. Is the GPU causing the the coil whine in the PSU or vice-versa? I don't know where to start. They are most likely both at fault, but as I said I wasn't bothered with the Rm650x's noise level in combination with the HD 6870 and GTX 970. That would point to the GPU. But what if the Rm650x just can't keep up with newer cards from now on? This would point to the PSU again.

Where do I start?

You might get away with just another sample, but, you stand way better chances wiht a different model and even manufacturer altogether. This because it may be somethign with that card individually, but it also may be something with that design and components used altogether. I have seen numerous examples of peaople changing their card with the same model and achieving the same result.

Just reporting back to confirm Hlsgsz's solution. Coil whine is dependent on countless factors and there is no surefire way around it. However, mixing and matching components can help to reduce it to an acceptable level.

In my case I replaced the card with a Palit 1070 Super Jetstream. In this current setup the whine is barely audible.
