how to format a hard drive

I gave my 1tb harddrive it's a usb 3.0 drive to my grandparents to use with their hopper to put movies on. I got it back, and now it's not recognized by my computer. like it won't show up in file explorer. I wen't to format it, and it poped up so I formatted it all, still not poping up

Right click start button > disk management > right click the space on teh drive > assign a drive letter.

it says it's unallocated and I don't see where to assign a letter update: the assign thing isn't there
