Best laptop for Univercity course - Teachers Aid/Assistant Course

I have been asked to search for a laptop for a family friend. I was told what course she takes, so I assume an i5 cpu is more then enough and average graphics usage for diagrams and pictures, online, MS Word.
I am thinking refurbished $500cdn max, so thats like $375usd.
I am looking at places like newegg.ca, bestbuy.ca and memoryexpress.com, primarily i5 from 3rd gen and up.
Prefer 4th gen, but I am looking at cpu speeds, dont want nothing too slow.
What brands and what models are of good quality?
