My 1 TB hard drive is on its last legs, what with the SATA cable not being able to hold itself in place anymore, so I'm springing for a 1 TB replacement and a new 480 GB SSD to act as the boot drive. After pruning or backing up most of the important or useless files or programs, I have about 281 GB on the drive I'm replacing. If I use a program like EaseUS to clone this old drive to an SSD, will it just copy over the used 281 GB onto the 480 GB SSD? Or will I have to shrink that partition to be at least 480 GBs so it will be able to copy?
And as for installation itself, is there anything in particular I need to do with installing the SSD and new HDD before I attempt cloning? Like do I plug them in and turn them on in the UEFI before or after I try to clone the old hard drive? Is it as simple as plugging in the SSD, cloning my boot partition to the SSD, turning off the computer, removing the bad drive, and then rearranging boot order in my BIOS?
Like it's not 100% required that I keep this old hard drive's contents, I can reinstall Windows, I really just don't want to go about redownloading all these old plugins, programs, and drivers. If anyone has a simple process for transfers like this, it's appreciated.
