I'm sure you guys get hundreds of these, but i was told this is the place to go for good information so figured id give it a shot and see what you guys had to say.

So i'm building my first PC (been a long time PC gamer but mostly with pre-built packages you get from the computer stores) so figured i would start with that and see if anything stands out as a red flag off the bad

Few Notes first off

  • ■ i live in Australia so prices are a lot higher than US
    ■ The SSD is one i purchased for my last PC and already has windows loaded on it so i would like to use that if possible as it will save money both on SSD and Windows (if i can use it that is).
    ■ Same with the DVD drive, if i can use it out of my old PC might as well.

Now on to the Questions....

  • ■How Hard is it to build a modern PC ? Can i do it with 0 xp or is it better to get someone else to do it for me ?

■In terms of GPU how much of an improvement is the 1070 over the 1060 its an extra $250 over the 1060 here, everything i read says 1070 is great but is it $250 great assuming i'm hoping to get 3 to 4 (would be happy if i could get 5 with some lower settings)years of gaming out of this PC before building another?

■What should i be looking for in a motherboard and power supply ? will any one that holds the chip and provide enough power suffice or will a better M/B + PSU provide a noticeable improvement?

■Will my current SSD work with the new system ? will windows just register all the new hardware?

    ■ In terms of CPU heat sink are those all-in-one liquid ones worth it or is it better to stick with one of those big fans that take out 1/2 the case?

I'm sure ill have more questions before i purchase everything (thinking weekend of 17th/18th) and trouble-shooting when i inevitably stuff it up and ill add them to this as i go.

Thanks in advance

here is a better video card:
http://au.pcpartpicker.com/product/tJyxFT/evga-geforce-gtx-1060-6gb-sc-gaming-video-card-06g-p4-6163-kr
The GTX 1070 will perform 30-40% better than 1060. what monitor you are going to use with this build ?
The advantage of the better MB is better stability and possibly better overclock.
The PSU is one of the most important components. number of watts is almost meaningless. the important things are quality of the components/build and performance.
Unit such Corsair RM60x/ RM750x and EVGA G2 series are excellent examples of decent PSU.
To build a computer is not hard even with 0 experience. It is mostly like lego :) And there are tons of Youtube guides. Look at linustechtip channel - they have plenty.
And no...

Hi, thanks for the responses.

Yeah i don't have a PSU in the system because frankly i have no idea what to look, this is the one you recommend ?
http://www.msy.com.au/pc-components/16909-corsair-rm650x-cp-9020091-au-650watt-80plus-gold-full-modular-atx-power-supply-unit.html
but its also $100 above some of the other (i don't plan to go that cheap, last thing i want is to fry everything else with a cheap PSU but is it really worth the extra $100).

Yeah i'm thinking Air cooler will probably be easier, just curious if the water coolers provided better performance to be worth the hassle.

5 years is probably pushing it but would like to still be running it in 4 (don't mind if its on lower settings, just trying to push for under $500/year outlay managed to get that out of last 3 pc's and its a reasonable argument to put forward to the "minister of family finance")

As for monitor i have a fairly old monitor (4 years) but PC is also in lounge room and will be able to be connected to a 55 inch UHD TV if i want to and its worth it, will eventually get a new monitor and when i do i want to run both monitors off the PC for work (nothing hardcore just Excel/Outlook/XERO/a few databases, just general number crunching stuff that's easier to do with 2+ monitors) will only ever be gaming on 1 monitor.

Was hoping to get most of the stuff from http://www.msy.com.au/234-pc-components as i work just down the road from them so would be easiest to pick them up on way home from work one Friday and put it together, but if some parts are significantly cheaper online (with postage) or are not stocked at MSY and worth the extra to order them online i'm willing to go to other places.

Thanks for the help so far, will keep reading and hopefully come up with a final build in the coming days.

Hey guys sorry about the delay, life got very busy so had to put off the build for a week.

Gave me time to do some more reading and stuff for the upcoming PC so i think i'm about set in terms of what i'm getting, will most likely get it this coming Friday and build Saturday assuming the parts are compatible and in stock.

Processor: i7 6700k http://www.msy.com.au/pc-components/15984-intel-bx80662i76700k-core-i7-6700k-40ghz-8mb-lga1151-skylake-boxed-cpu.html
CPU Cooler: Noctua NH-U9B-SE2 http://www.msy.com.au/pc-accessories/12056-noctua-nh-u9b-se2-performance-cpu-cooler-universal.html
Motherboard: Gigabyte Z170X gaming 6 http://www.msy.com.au/pc-components/16786--gigabyte-z170x-gaming-6-intel-z170-s1151-4xddr4-3xpciex16-hdmi-dp-usb31-type-a-atx-motherboard.html
Memory/Ram: 16GB G.Skill Ripjaw DDR4 http://www.msy.com.au/memory/16195--gskill-ripjaws-v-f4-3200c16d-16gvkb-16gb-kit-8gx2-ddr4-3200-desktop-ram.html
PSU: Antec HCG 620M http://www.msy.com.au/pc-components/12171-antec-hcg-620m-620w-high-current-gamer-modular-gaming-psu.html
Case: Antec 1100v2 http://www.msy.com.au/without-psu/15582--antec-1100v2-eleven-hundred-v2-usb30-mid-tower-gaming-case-without-psu.html
Storage: 2TB 3.5" Seagate Barracuda http://www.msy.com.au/pc-components/5103-seagate-35-barracuda-2tb-st2000dm001-sata3-7200rpm-64mb-cache-hard-disk.html

That just leaves Optical Drive, SSD and GPU, as previously stated the DVD drive and the SSD will come from my current setup and as for the GPU i'm still undecided between the 1060 and the 1070, below

GPU 1: Gigabyte 1060 Windforce OC http://www.msy.com.au/pc-components/17472-gigabyte-n1060wf2oc-6gd-6g-gtx-1060-windforce-oc-pci-e-vga-card.html
GPU 2: Gigabyte 1070 Windforce OC http://www.msy.com.au/pc-components/17190--gigabyte-n1070wf2oc-8gd-8g-gtx-1070-windforce-oc-pci-e-vga-card.html

i am leaning towards the 1070 as price is less of a factor than performance (although the 1080 is still a bit steep for even me) but i also have a couple of friends running 1060's and they say that the 1070 will be overkill for what i play. (SC2, Dota 2, Xcom 2, Civ 5 but will also go back and get a few of the recent AAA games i didn't get because my old system couldn't handle it like Witcher 3, Doom, Mankind Divided etc) The main reason i'm building the PC now is in prep for Civ 6 as my current PC lags enough when it gets to late game on a huge maps with 12 comps if that helps with the decision.

And one lot of questions, the build comes to $1,675 (with 1060) or $1,915 (with 1070) and i started with a budget of $2,100 not including Screen/Mouse/Keyboard and preferably using the SSD from my current set up so i could also save on OS and not have to install a bunch of other things and plan on not building a new PC for another 4 years. Assuming i stick to the $2,100 budget;

  • ■ Will this be enough to handle most new release games for the next say 3 years (doesn't have to be max settings just smoothly)?
    ■ Assuming i'm gonna spend the full $2,100 where would the remaining $185 be best spent in terms of performance?
    ■ In terms of long term performance would it be better to get the 1060 now save the $240 difference and in say 2 years just upgrade the GPU to a new one that's around the $400-$500 mark

Thanks,

It depends on the monitor you are planning to use with this system.
From 1080p@60Hz to 1080p@100Hz --> GTX 1060
for 1080p@144Hz and above (like 1440p) --> GTX 1070
from the parts listed above, I don't like the case, IMHO Fractal Design Define R5 (to have optical drive) or Fractal Design Define S (who needs optical drive) are much better in terms of clean, airflow optimized design.
the additional budget (assuming you have SSD+HDD) IMHO would be better spent on peripherals

Thanks, looks like that case i have listed is out of stock anyway, kinda need one with a DVD player/Burner for work so that seems to be ruling out a few cases right off the bat. :( although the R5 dose look kind of sleek, this is the one yeah http://www.msy.com.au/pc-components/14738-fractal-design-fd-ca-defr5-bk-define-r5-black-usb3-mid-tower-case-without-psu.html , although i have been told this case is also pretty good http://www.msy.com.au/case/13435-corsair-ccspec-03-carbide-spec-03-black-usb30-mid-tower-case-without-psu.html

On a more pressing note than the case seems my MB is also out of stock, so i need to find a replacement that is sturdy and around the same mark (although i could go a little up like i said in my last post), unfortunately MSY doesn't seem to have much around that bracket besides

are any of them are any good? also been told its worth the drive to go and get a,

https://www.pccasegear.com/products/32867/asrock-fatal1ty-z170-gaming-k6-motherboard

Which looks nice and I've always been a fan of ASRock boards (well last 2 boards have been ASRocks, and never had any issues with them so that's good enough for me) but also means i will defiantly need a case with front slots if i want to use the USB 3 connector thing it comes with.

Once again thanks for the help

I'm not a fan of ASRock and MSI - I'll always remember them as low tier crap :) Though MSI somewhat improved, but not there yet.
the gigabyte ... well, every board I owned either had issues (like some connector is not working properly) or died. Same true for my friends with high end PCs.
So I'd look at those two if I were forced to do non mini ITX build today:

Matching the black/red theme.
and here is the black/white:
